The only enemy is me.

That’s the hardest and most freeing thing I’ve ever learned. People will lie, cheat, and steal to protect their ego. They’ll make the person across from them the villain in a story that was always about themselves.

The truth is there’s no external enemy. The voice in your head is a liar. The problem was always you. The problem was always me.

At Common, that’s the code. Do more. Be better. Protect and more importantly accept the people behind you. Do the right thing.

Tonight is Thursday.
There will be new faces in the parking lot. We define our future by how we show up for them.

Control what you can control.
Be better.
Do more.
Most importantly, do the right thing.

6:00PM.

Lee Miller has been making boots by hand since he was 18.

He trained under Charlie Dunn and took over the shop when Charlie retired. Almost 50 years later he’s still there every day, teaching the next generation the same way he was taught.

A few months ago I started working with @bevandaproducts to help tell their story. Part of that is the Makers Series, which highlights the men and women in the trades and a few weeks ago we sat down with Lee at his shop, @texas_traditions_boots, in Austin for the next episode.

Hustle culture gets to me sometimes. It makes me feel like the work I do matters less if it isn’t fast or cheap or even “scalable” (whatever tf that means). But then I spend an afternoon with a man who’s spent half a century making one thing well and I remember, that’s never been the point.

If you make things, take your time with them.

Caring about the craft is what makes the work worth anything. It’s a big part of what makes us human.

Thank you, Lee.

Impact is what we’re all about. A week ago, that’s exactly what happened.

35 athletes took the stairs at the Philadelphia Art Museum to change lives as part of the annual Legacy of Hope PHL24 fundraiser. Over $220,000 raised. That’s the kind of impact we aim to be a part of, and we were grateful for the chance to hydrate every athlete through 24 hours of climbing.

Congrats to two of our own on monster performances. And thank you to the 35 other athletes who now fly the flag with us.

Become a part of something bigger than yourself.

As always. Be you. Be Common.

Second year on the Rocky Steps with @legacyofhope_phl.

$215,000 and counting raised to support cancer patients and their families.

Thankful for the physical ability to put one foot after another. Quitting is a luxury. Cancer sucks. I miss my brother, man.

Takeaway from this year: the brain has a funny way of telling you stories that you “can’t”. But unless you’re dead, you still have something to give.

Thank you @corefitgina and @michaelrowe_ for being the heart behind this and impacting so many people around us.

Thanks @curranblevins for joining the crew and being an absolute dog.

Shoutout out to the unsanctioned bro @yvnghopper12 and all my family and friends who showed up and put in miles with us.

And for anyone who donated, I thought about each of you during that 24 hours. Thank you for your support.

Excited to see the lives that will be impacted by this.

34 athletes right before go time.

Helloooooo

@jake_maley and Arlan in the wee hours.

early in the adventure.

my ride or die, Kbear. walking with me and keeping me motivated. by @cameronbroadhurst

It was somewhere around the 16th hour of the @legacyofhope_phl where I joined @curranblevins for a few laps up the steps as we awaited what was expected to be quite the rainfall in the hours to come.

Being in uncharted territory, you would expect morale to be at an all time low, but what I was met with was quite the opposite. We chatted about @common.ltd, stories from the past and the current task at hand, and then Curran looked to me and asked “So, what’s the number?”

“75.” I replied with confidence.

Over the next few hours what I witnessed and captured was nothing short of true grit and determination, without ever once faltering from the mission at hand. All fueled by @common.ltd

Quitting is a luxury they say, and on that stormy morning there was no other option than to compete the 75 miles.

(Even if the entire crew falls asleep in the process 🤣)

Big up @austindlawrence_ @22caden @cameronbroadhurst & everyone involved by @cameronbroadhurst

“I’m waiting on the rain to come and wash it all away.”

We all carry heavy things. Some of it can never be taken back or fixed. Some losses come out of nowhere. Some happened a long time ago. Neither one is easier than the other.

Twenty four hours on those steps gives you a lot of time to sit with what actually matters, and with the what ifs you usually keep buried.

The rain came. It poured through the night, through the last climb, and it was still coming down when we walked away. It didn’t wash anything away. That isn’t how it works. But no one that day and into the night moved through it alone. Those names were said aloud and are remembered.

What an absolutely amazing experience and what an incredible weekend.

Thank you to everyone who donated.

@22caden thank you for pacing me for a few hours in there.

@austindlawrence_ thank you for running with me and for being the guy who had the plan and made it actually happen.

@jameslano thank you for capturing the moments.

@cameronbroadhurst most of all, thank you for letting me walk alongside you.

@savblev for coming down for a few hours and being my rock. Holding it down at home with the kids and for all you do to keep our incredible life moving forward.

Thank you everyone who texted, called, checked in. X

Congrats on amazing year @legacyofhope_phl and congrats on raising over $200,000 for the work that matters.
