“Participating in StoryLab was a dream of mine since I learned about Saul Zaentz in 2019. To receive SZIF funding was the only way to make a project like this happen, and I am beyond grateful. I am extremely proud of SOFIA and where it’s going, but more importantly, of the people I met during the lab! Cheers to the “greatest city in America”, its arts community, and the filmmaking that happens here. And thank you to Saul Zaentz for supporting every year, making it all possible for local filmmakers.” - Director @camiladeilheus

2019 started really well for me! My photograph “Minha Prima,” taken in January 2018 won the Purchase Prize Award for the juried photography exhibition I was a part of at the Biggs Museum of American Art in Delaware, and it is now part of their permanente collection! Hoping the rest of the year will be as great as January has been! by @camiladeilheus

Born and raised in California without enough exposure to my cultural heritage, I moved to South Korea shortly after college. While living among people who looked like me and spoke the language my family spoke, I felt a sense of belonging I’d never felt before.

So, when I came back home to the US, my memory of living in Korea had felt like a dream—one that made me question whether or not it happened at all.

A couple of weeks ago, I went to @camiladeilheus’ book launch and signing of Saudade, a collection of photos she captured of her mom, community, and hometown in Brazil.

A word that has no translation in English, Saudade is the longing for a place you can’t return to, or a person that’s gone, or something that doesn’t exist.

There is no better word for those of us in between, to describe that longing to belong.

Check out her website for information on how to purchase this beautiful photo book—the first of many! by @camiladeilheus

Thrilled is the PG word I choose to use to describe how very happy I am to be taking part in this year’s @torinofilmlab Feature Film program to develop my feature film Ramona.

An idea that started in January 2025, after I was held for a little too long at customs, is taking its first baby steps… I knew back then that immigration in the US was going to turn upside down. And as someone who grew up loving super heroes, specially the Ninja Turtles (they are super heroes and I’ll fight anyone on it), creating the one I wished to see today was the logical next move.

A lot more talent folk selected - I am just reposting the group shot that I was a part of. But you can read more about all projects here: https://torinofilmlab.it/labs/tfl-next 🇮🇹

Thank you to the Torino Film Lab team for believing in this project ✨

This is a long time coming… I am elated to share the release of my first photobook will be happening this September in Baltimore, MD. With a follow up release in Los Angeles, CA in October and then São Paulo, Brasil. The exact dates and locations will be published shortly!

The most huge thank you to Liz Faust, who proposed the idea of a book when we talked about my first solo show, when I had never considered it.

Another huge thank you to Natalia Rodrigues, with Ipsis, for her patience as I navigated the first time doing this, alongside their managing, editing and printing team.

E mais importante, a minha família, MUITO OBRIGADA; eu amo vocês mais do que palavras conseguem descrever. Isso aqui não existe sem vocês.

Book opening below on what is SAUDADE?

Not translatable to the English language, saudade is the core of Camila’s photographs. It’s the love that remains, not quite as deep as grief or as subtle as missing someone. It can exist for something that has passed or it can be the yearning for something that hasn’t happened, and might never exist. Change being the only constant state we live in, if nostalgia met poignant at a bar, in the hometown poignant grew up in, on the street where nostalgia’s ex used to live and they had a one night stand without protection… Saudade would have been born. English speakers can’t translate it, but they certainly feel it, as all humans do.

Additional thank yous:

“The firsts are always the hardest, and the Saul Zaentz Innovation Fund was that for me in my filmmaking career. During the script lab, I met with a handful of industry experts, which was great! The push and pull of ideas always helps the project. Different people had different opinions about what I was trying to say, and I always take into consideration the thoughts and responses of people who take their time to listen to what I want to make and push the story forward. But what made Saul Zaentz extra special is the direct involvement of the director, Annette Porter, who reads everyone’s scripts and gives individual feedback on them.

After the lab, we were paired with a mentor with whom we worked more in-depth. I had the pleasure of working with Tim Perell, who is a producer, and the conversations with him were fundamental and ultimately changed the ending of the piece. After the lab and working with our mentors for a couple of months, we were able to apply for funding, and I was fortunate enough to receive the full support I needed from them.”

We were so excited to see former fellow Camila de Ilhéus featured on @directorsnotes earlier this month! Her short film SOFIA uses cringe comedy to layer examinations of beauty standards, language barriers, and online dating. SOFIA is currently out on the festival circuit, screening around the country and world. Congratulations Camila! by @camiladeilheus

"I like the awkwardness of holding a shot because I feel you are there with a character, feeling it in real time. So I knew I wasn't going to approach it with fast cuts."

A wince-inducing collision of dating app bravado, one slippery word and a salon appointment gone spectacularly wrong, @camiladeilheus 'Sofia' pins its screen-obsessed lead in static frames and lets the mortification build in real time.
