One week in Iceland with the RIFF Talent Lab! I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity 🥲 It was so wonderful to be surrounded by likeminded filmmakers and to attend the Reykjavík International Film Festival.

Talent Lab Highlights:
- much needed dose of optimism about getting movies made
- pitching my sexy alien script
- getting invested in my lab-mates' feature projects
- creative discussions with directors & producers from all over the world
- crash course on the Icelandic film industry with @theinsecurescreenwriter and @michellecpaige_autorin

Iceland Highlights:
- soaking in thermal pools (3 out of 6 days, not bad for an American)
- pouring soju into the sink with @darkest_just_before_dawn so we could bottle Icelandic water
- convincing @elletheone_ to let me do social media for her stunning volcano movie
- scooting like I have never scooted before and will never scoot again
- cheeseburgers at the student union (3 out of 6 days, not great for an American)

Huge thank you to Andri Óttarsson, @amandakernell, @valaomars, @erik_hemmendorff, @baldvinz, @olofbtorfa, Edgar Medina, @blertabb, defleurinc, @mdmpelomundo, Hlín Jóhannesdóttir, @kristofer_dignus, @arnarbenjamin and everyone who took the time to chat with our lab cohort.

Cape Town | 25 October | 16:00 – 17:15 at Homecoming Centre

Day 1 | Session 2: Through Her Eyes

Through Her Eyes is a film session that examines power through the lens of women lead films. The films in the session depict the ordinary experiences in life in which women negotiate, reconstruct and legitimise their power in society on screen.

Tanglewood - directed by Annmarie Larkins @toannmarie

A girls’ night out spirals out of control when Sloane, a successful radio broadcaster with a biting perspective on relationships, confronts a past lover—and her own unresolved rage.

Dëmm - directed by Aida Captijn @captijnaida_

Haunted by the death of her mother, a young woman drifting through Dakar crosses paths with a secretive sisterhood of soul-eating women — the dëmm — triggering a mysterious metamorphosis that forces her to confront loss and identity.

Sofia - directed by Camila de Ilhéus @camiladeilheus

A quick waxing session turns into a nightmare when a Brazilian accidentally gets a brazilian.

Womanland - directed by Yasmin Yassin @yazziz

Two young Somali sisters in Minneapolis have to balance rebellion with their reputations when their secret matchmaking business attracts a client a little too close to home.

Samra’s Dollhouse - directed by Maissa Lihedheb @classicminoritypresents

Samra (38), a heartbroken Tunisian director finds the perfect male lead for her new romance movie, but during rehearsals, the young actor Hedi (24) begins to suspect that his role may not be a fictitious one.

They say in Iceland, if it’s raining, you just have to wait five minutes and it’ll be sunny. I found, if you wait five minutes, you can make some really great friends.

Big thank you to @reykjavikfilmfestival for having me be apart of THE TALENT LAB and nominating animals for THE GOLDEN EGG. Had such a spectacular time pitching the feature version of the short alongside 30 other really spectacular projects!

Born and raised in California without enough exposure to my cultural heritage, I moved to South Korea shortly after college. While living among people who looked like me and spoke the language my family spoke, I felt a sense of belonging I’d never felt before.

So, when I came back home to the US, my memory of living in Korea had felt like a dream—one that made me question whether or not it happened at all.

A couple of weeks ago, I went to @camiladeilheus’ book launch and signing of Saudade, a collection of photos she captured of her mom, community, and hometown in Brazil.

A word that has no translation in English, Saudade is the longing for a place you can’t return to, or a person that’s gone, or something that doesn’t exist.

There is no better word for those of us in between, to describe that longing to belong.

Check out her website for information on how to purchase this beautiful photo book—the first of many!
