Camp Desi Roots empowers South Asian youth to build a deeply rooted sense of self and belonging through storytelling and outdoor adventure.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I can’t imagine ending on a higher note (both literally and figuratively!) than to the revolutionary sounds of the @bhangraliberation with @iamsonnysingh ! Oh, what a night! We danced barefoot, we laughed so hard we fell down, we picked each other up, we were exploding with the joy that comes from being in community. Huge shout out to @renee_broadyphotography for capturing these magical moments, not just with your lens, but with your heart.

We started the week as individuals. We ended the week as one community.

We are one family. We are Camp Desi Roots. Join us! Registration opens 10/30. by @campdesiroots

It’s hard to believe it’s now been 2 years since we conceived of Camp Desi Roots. In that time, we’ve seen kids transform - from sharing their family histories, to leading sessions and showcasing their talents, to organizing relief efforts for Nepal, to rock climbing or paddle boarding, to making lifelong friends, to finding a sense of belonging away from home….for the first time.

Camp Desi Roots is about our kids….

Finding themselves
Building community
Discovering their roots
Sharing their stories
Speaking their truths
Taking risks
Being seen
Seeing each other
Knowing they belong
Finding their power

We’re not just a camp - we’re a movement, an act of joyful resistance in a fractured world, where we weave beautiful tapestries of community and belonging across the South Asian diaspora.

Join us next summer - 8/2 - 8/8 in the Poconos. Registration for returning families opens on Monday, 10/19, and for new families on Friday, 10/30. Can’t wait to be together again!!! by @campdesiroots

Zuri’s song captivated our hearts and souls during Camp Desi Roots Family Night, when she stood up in front of our families and shared the story of her beautiful duality as both Indian and American with her debut song, “Dosa for Lunch, Pizza for Dinner.” ❤️❤️❤️ My heart was singing as I watched her sing about existing in both worlds, a song about being deeply rooted and grounded in both, of belonging to both, of not needing to choose, of seeing herself as many beautiful puzzle pieces, which, despite their differences, fit together to make our beautiful little girl whole.

In the way that only she can, Zuri captured the spirit of Camp Desi Roots - where we can find deep belonging, where we are accepted for our dualities, for our struggles, for our imperfections, where we can bring down our protective walls, take off our masks, where we are seen for who we are, where our voices and our stories matter, where we are family, where we can simply be ourselves, and find joy, love, and community in each other.

And by we, I mean all of us - kids and counselors, Nanas and Nanis, Awas and Thathas, Mamas and Mamis, Didis, Bhaiyas, Mausis - we all found ourselves and belonging in each other, and felt how powerful it truly is to be seen for who we are.

Thank you, my beautiful daughter, Zuri, for inspiring us every single day. I love you. by @campdesiroots

Last month, Zuri was interviewed by her school district, Somerville Public Schools, and just this week, they released the story on their district website. When I saw the story, I cried. But let me back up.

A little more than a year ago, something sparked in Zuri at our camp. She heard @amarshah speak about his journey as an author, and it clicked in her that she could do the same. She realized that authors didn’t just exist “out there” in some depersonalized world, but “in here.” And she realized, through his story of struggling, failing, and trying over and over again, that she could also do it.

And so she did. She started on the journey to write “The Bindi Girls” a year ago, and this past August, she debuted the book at camp, right where the seed was planted (in front of many of the same friends and counselors who inspired her and cheered her on throughout!). There aren’t too many full circle moments like that in life - this one was.

I’m constantly amazed by the way she moves through the world - how she sees the world in prose, how she turns mundane moments together at home into poetry, how she paints the world with magic, how she’s constantly filled with wonder.

I’ve seen her grow not just as a writer, but as a human, as she’s learned more about her own roots, her own origin story, and has started to fill out the contours of her being. All at the tender age of 10.

What we all need is a reason to believe, a little bit of magic and poetry packaged in shiny paper, a sparkle of wonder, hope that we’ll find out way through the darkness.

Grateful and so proud to be your mother, my sweet little girl ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏽🙏🏽 by @campdesiroots

At camp this year, our theme was organizing - what it means to bring people together, to mobilize and inspire people to make a difference, to do something bigger than ourselves. We talked about what it means to be a changemaker, and how we can all play a role in different ways, as storytellers, weavers, builders, connectors, and that’s what our kids did this week. They saw the enormity of the need in Nepal, and they mobilized. They organized. They brought people together. So proud of our kiddos for standing by our brothers and sisters in Nepal, for not hesitating for even a moment to give to a cause larger than themselves. This is who we are. We are Camp Desi Roots. 🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️❤️ by @campdesiroots

As you know, the flash floods in Nepal have taken a devastating and tragic toll on families. If you are looking to donate, please consider Saral Nepali Language and Culture Center’s flood relief efforts in Nepal, a non profit that is near and dear to one of our camp families. Zuri will also be organizing a fundraiser in our neighborhood on Friday, if any kids also want to do the same this upcoming Friday as a sign of solidarity with our Nepali families. Please support in any way you can. Sending love ❤️ by @campdesiroots

We had a very busy day doing a day trip from Washington DC to @campdesiroots in the Poconos Mountains in Pennsylvania for back-to-back workshops with 80 youth of the South Asian diaspora. It is only the second year of this camp and @storywithsari was happy to be able to make it there this time to work with these lovely young people from across the US to cocreate two art- and poetry-filled saris. The participants first wrote short poems reflecting on their family and objects and memories special to them. We had a lively poetry slam followed by transforming these poems into concrete poems or visual poems that were laid out on the blue saris with paint pens and markers. Teams were also formed to print the borders of the sari in patterns with woodblocks designed by @mjbose and carved out of mango wood in Bangladesh. The tactile act of working together to negotiate space on the sari and create a collaborative artwork is really beautiful and builds a mini community. All these hands touching the same sari imbue it with power and creative energy! The saris were carried outside to blow in the wind and dry on the grass, just like in the villages of Bangladesh. @mjbose sang a Bengali song she learned from the women farmers of her ancestral village: “The tide goes in, the tide goes out… I’m a girl from the tidal village.” These saris will be displayed to the @campdesiroots families and ultimately return to Bangladesh to be worn as garments by women farmers in Katakhali Village on Barobaisdia island. This year’s theme for @campdesiroots was Social Justice and @storywithsari was thrilled to work with these next generation of South Asian activists and change makers. From the beginning in 2012 @storywithsari has been an intergenerational project with participation of all ages. It was a huge pleasure to meet all these inquisitive and imaginative young people, a diverse group with roots in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Guyana, India, Nepal, Africa, and coming from NY, Chicago, DC and more! #storytellingwithsaris #sociallyengagedart #ecofeminist #southasianart #campdesiroots taken in Pocono Mountains,Pensylvania by @campdesiroots

I can list all the things we did on this day, but what really matters are the relationships we made, the community we built, the conversations we had, and the ways in which we became part of each others’ stories. That’s what Camp Desi Roots is about - community, belonging, joy, reflection, acceptance, and most importantly love - for ourselves, and for each other. Huge shout out to Kartik Das @kartikdas for not only bringing delicious @eatdoosra snacks, but for sharing his story, and encouraging kids to do the same - “how did your family desify food growing up??” And shout out to Akanksha and Cheyenne @akankshasinha00 for having important conversations with our kids about technology and identity. And big big up to Soma @mehndi_by_soma for beautifying us with your mehendi skills!!! ❤️🙏🏽👏🏽 by @campdesiroots

At Camp Desi Roots, our voices matter. Whether it’s through kids’ presentations of their organizing campaigns, their theatre performances, or sessions led by kids for kids ranging from how to be an author workshops to baseball to music theory - our kids speak up. They take the stage. They shine. It’s incredible what our kids are capable of if we give them the opportunity to sparkle. Our stories matter, our voices matter, we matter. Huge shout out to our facilitators on this wonderful day - Henna with her dhamaka dance, @hennakhanijou , Arjun with his phenomenal acting, @arjunathalye , and Safa and Sravya from @hindusforhumanrights and @indianamericanmuslimcouncil for coming together as a force to inspire our kids to think and act like organizers! There’s so limit to what our kids can do!!! by @campdesiroots

Immense gratitude for Sravya and Safa from @hindusforhumanrights and the @indianamericanmuslimcouncil for leading a thought provoking session on organizing, and to Monica Jahan Bose @mjbose for leading our kids through a powerful storytelling through saris session, where they imprinted their stories into beautiful saris with block prints 🙏🏽❤️ And of course, what better way to end the day than Desi Olympics??? by @campdesiroots
