Camp Desi Roots empowers South Asian youth to build a deeply rooted sense of self and belonging through storytelling and outdoor adventure.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We had a very busy day doing a day trip from Washington DC to @campdesiroots in the Poconos Mountains in Pennsylvania for back-to-back workshops with 80 youth of the South Asian diaspora. It is only the second year of this camp and @storywithsari was happy to be able to make it there this time to work with these lovely young people from across the US to cocreate two art- and poetry-filled saris. The participants first wrote short poems reflecting on their family and objects and memories special to them. We had a lively poetry slam followed by transforming these poems into concrete poems or visual poems that were laid out on the blue saris with paint pens and markers. Teams were also formed to print the borders of the sari in patterns with woodblocks designed by @mjbose and carved out of mango wood in Bangladesh. The tactile act of working together to negotiate space on the sari and create a collaborative artwork is really beautiful and builds a mini community. All these hands touching the same sari imbue it with power and creative energy! The saris were carried outside to blow in the wind and dry on the grass, just like in the villages of Bangladesh. @mjbose sang a Bengali song she learned from the women farmers of her ancestral village: “The tide goes in, the tide goes out… I’m a girl from the tidal village.” These saris will be displayed to the @campdesiroots families and ultimately return to Bangladesh to be worn as garments by women farmers in Katakhali Village on Barobaisdia island. This year’s theme for @campdesiroots was Social Justice and @storywithsari was thrilled to work with these next generation of South Asian activists and change makers. From the beginning in 2012 @storywithsari has been an intergenerational project with participation of all ages. It was a huge pleasure to meet all these inquisitive and imaginative young people, a diverse group with roots in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Guyana, India, Nepal, Africa, and coming from NY, Chicago, DC and more! #storytellingwithsaris #sociallyengagedart #ecofeminist #southasianart #campdesiroots

And finally, women who amplify stories, culture, and community. Whether it is my favourite podcast, South Asian Trailblazers, the businesses I admire that friends and those from afar have built, or the book community that continues to share and uplift stories, these women are shaping how we learn and connect.

This is part of a series of posts celebrating women who are shaping our literary and cultural lives. It is most definitely not a complete list (apologies if I inadvertently missed you). There are many more creators, founders, and community builders whose work needs to be recognised and supported. I hope this post encourages you to find them, follow them, and champion the spaces they are creating.

Happy International Women’s Day.

CAMP DESI ROOTS! 🌳🏕️

✨This was the start of something truly special and we’re so grateful to have been a part of it.✨

It’s not often when multi-generations can come to celebrate their culture, far away from their homeland.🌺

The experience was so healing, but it makes us question, Why can’t we do this everyday?

Changing our names to fit the western way of pronunciations, removing a piece of ourselves just to satisfy others...

How can something that went by so quick, leave so many thoughts and unanswered questions.

✨That’s just how incredible it was!✨

Thank you to Prerna and the @campdesiroots team for inviting us to speak and be part of the movement.

It was our absolute pleasure to play Desi fusion music at the closing ceremonies at @campdesiroots for the kids and their parents at the end of a week of sleep away camp for the kids in the Poconos.

This past year has become all about sharing the story of our culture and background having a resident place in our daily lives. Being of South Asian descent in America can be a confusing thing, especially if you don’t grow up with context for it, or a place to show you that both can exist at once- that you are perfect exactly how you are.

This music is Desi fusion because… WE are all Desi fusion!

It was so heart warming to see so many kids (and so many parents too!) resonating with the message and the music and how much joy it gave us to see everyone having a meaningful and celebratory time!

Thank you, Camp Desi Roots, we love you!!

Last Friday reminded me how much we all crave space - to connect, move, and just be in nature. We gathered under open skies for yoga, sipped hibiscus iced tea, snack on date moringa luddus, shared Ayurvedic tips, and ended the evening with good conversation and even better company. If that sounds like your kind of evening, I’m planning more gatherings like that- laid back, nourishing, and rooted in rhythm and ritual. 🌿 Want to join next time? Dm me your email and I’ll add you to the list. #ayurveda #ayurvedaformoms #sisterhoodinnature #modernrituals
