It blows me away because of what it represents:

Men choosing to build lives rooted in family, purpose, growth, health, and simplicity.

Men rejecting the noise and leaning into what really matters.
We’re just getting started.

Most men don’t even realize they’re drifting—living on autopilot instead of with intention.

If you are, now's the time to make a change.

Sometimes people from your past surprise you.

Not because they changed overnight.

But because life kept working on them while you weren’t paying attention.

Bryan Falchuk talked about reconnecting with old friends from high school — including one he didn’t even get along with back then — who are now among his closest friends.

That stuck with me.

Because it’s easy to freeze people in the version of themselves we used to know.

The awkward teenager.
The guy from high school.
The person from an old season of life.

But people keep living.

They grow.
They struggle.
They mature.
They become someone different.

And sometimes, if you’re willing to reach back out, you find there’s still something there.

Not the exact same friendship.

Maybe something better.

A friendship with history behind it and enough life lived to make it deeper.

Maybe there’s someone worth checking in on.

Attention is a form of care.
Listening tells someone they matter.

In a noisy world,
being fully heard
is one of the simplest and rarest gifts.

Most of us like to think we’d stand our ground when the answer is obvious.

The Asch Conformity Study suggests otherwise.

In my conversation with Chad Hennings, he talked about the famous experiment showing how willing people can be to go along with a group—even when they know the group is wrong.

That’s the uncomfortable part.

Sometimes the pressure to fit in is stronger than the pressure to be right.

And that’s worth remembering anytime “everybody knows” something.

We all have things we say matter to us.

Family.
Health.
Marriage.
Friendship.
Faith.
Growth.

But the harder question is whether our lives reflect any of it.

You can say family comes first and still never make time for them.
You can say your health matters and keep putting it off.
You can say friendship is important and never send the text.

Our values aren’t revealed by what we claim.
They’re revealed by what our ordinary days keep making room for.

A wedding ring is just metal.
A photograph is paper.
A baseball glove is leather and stitching.
A recipe is ink on a card.

None of those things are inherently meaningful.

We make them meaningful.

Through memory.
Attention.
Sacrifice.
Repetition.
Love.

A thing becomes meaningful when part of our life gets attached to it.

And I think our lives work the same way.

We often assume meaning comes first, and then we give something our attention.

But most of the time, it happens in reverse.

We give something our time.
Our energy.
Our care.
Our best hours.

And slowly, it becomes meaningful to us.

A marriage.
A friendship.
Parenthood.
Work.
A community.

But the same thing can happen with status.
Outrage.
Our phones.
Or work that slowly consumes our entire identity.

Meaning grows where attention goes.

Which makes a different question worth asking:

Not just, “What is my purpose?”

But:

“What is currently receiving my life?”

I wrote about why meaning may not be something we discover at all.

It may be something we slowly transfer.

You don’t always know which lessons your kids are learning from you.

Sometimes it isn’t what you told them.

It’s what they watched you do.

In my conversation with former Dallas Cowboy and three-time Super Bowl champion Chad Hennings, he talked about the moment he realized his kids had been paying attention to how he handled difficult situations, whether his actions matched his words, and how he carried himself when he didn’t know anyone was watching.

“What we say and what we do matters and it counts.”

Our kids are watching.

And probably remembering more than we realize.

It’s easy to decide a sacrifice is reasonable when someone else is the one making it.

More time.
More money.
Less convenience.
A change in habits.

That’s true in big public debates.

But it’s also true at home.

We want our spouse to be more present while protecting our own downtime. We tell our kids to get off their screens while scrolling on ours. We want someone else to communicate better without reconsidering how we communicate.

So it might be worth asking two questions:

Would I consider this reasonable if I were the one being asked?

And:

What part of the cost is mine to bear?

Because it’s easy to imagine a better life using somebody else’s sacrifice.

But, eventually, we have to put something of our own on the table.

There’s a song you’ve heard hundreds of times.

You know every word.
Every guitar part.
Exactly when the drums come in.

Then one day, you hear something in it you’ve never heard before.

But the song didn’t change.

You did.

Maybe you got married.
Had kids.
Lost someone.
Failed at something.
Got older.

And suddenly, the song you knew at 18 means something completely different at 45.

I think that’s true of more than music.

Books. Movies. Places. Things our parents told us. Even people we thought we understood.

We keep bringing new versions of ourselves back to them.

And every once in a while, something we’ve known by heart for decades introduces itself again.

Same song.

Different listener.

I wrote about why the things we love can change without changing at all.

Your kids may know you love them.

Say it anyway.

Tell them you’re proud of them.
Tell them you enjoy spending time with them.
Tell them you appreciate them.
Tell them you believe in them.

As Dan Peterson put it in our conversation, you don’t hear many adults say, “I wish my parents had told me they loved me less.”

But you hear plenty who wish they’d heard it more.

Don’t make the people you love guess how you feel about them.

“There’s no version of a meaningful life where we get everything we want without giving up something else we kind of want too.”

We want a stronger marriage.

Better health.
More time with our family.
More peace.
More connection.

But it’s easy to build a plan where all the sacrifice belongs to someone else.

They need to communicate better.
They need to put the phone down.
They need to change their habits.
They need to make more time.

Maybe they do.

But if I want something in my life to improve, at some point I have to ask:

What part of the cost belongs to me?

Not all of it.

Just my part.
