October is OCD awareness month, a month that is extremely important to me. I want to start this by saying that I am a pretty inclosed person and have not always been open about my mental health, it has taken me a long journey to get to the point I am at and I am currently still in that journey. It can be such a scary and vulnerable subject to talk about, but I want to speak my experience to be able to comfort those who might still feel lonely in their struggles. I want to start off by saying that no matter how alone you feel inside your head, you are not alone. I know the feeling and yes I still feel it at times, please reach out if you ever feel you are struggling, I promise I understand, I see you. Now here is a little bit about me, around the age of 5 I started to show symptoms of a mental disorder known as OCD(Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). I went on most of my life just believing that I had General Anxiety Disorder. I was so embarrassed of my mind and the uncontrollable things I would think about. I was ashamed of myself and was starting to believe that I was some absolute freak. Finally around my junior year of high school, it started getting very dark. I would dissociate (a symptom of ocd) most of the day and have almost no recollection of the day or an image of hope in my mind. I have always been afraid of people around me being able to see my flaws, or how imperfect I was, so I have always tried to be seen as the most put together person. Most people when they look at me would never know because I have always made that a goal of mine. I’m not saying this for pity, but that maybe you can relate and realize social media is far from reality. I was fully diagnosed about 5 years ago. It was a major relief but also at the same time the complete opposite. With anyone struggling with mental health, it can be hard to come to terms that you actually are diagnosed with something. One of the most relieving things I have ever done was become aware of my mind and what I let have power. You have the great gift of the ability to be mindful.
