Happy 21st Birthday to my Yellow Bird… 🐤

Yellow bird up high in a banana tree… 🎶

For 21 years, I’ve watched this little Yellow Bird grow from the baby who would smile, giggle, or instantly stop crying every time I sang that song to him, into the incredible young man he is today. And somewhere along the way, Yellow Bird became simply… Bird. 😂💛

Bird, you are truly one of the sweetest souls I know. You are kind, thoughtful, understanding, supportive, and somehow always seem to know how to make me laugh (even when life feels like the darkest storm). You have this beautiful way of bringing a little SONshine into my day just by being you.

It’s honestly a little surreal looking at you now and realizing that my baby is 21. Like… sir??? When did you become a whole grown-ass MAN? 😂😭

I am so incredibly proud of the person you’ve become. Not just for what you do, but for who you are. Your heart, your character, your kindness, your sense of humour, and the way you show up for the people you love.

Being your mom has been one of the greatest gifts of my life. And even though you’re officially 21 now (which I am choosing to ignore because I clearly have not aged a day 😌😂), you will always, ALWAYS be my Yellow Bird 🐥

Happy 21st Birthday to my Younga, my Bird. 💛

My heart is full. ❤️

Closing out this season with nothing but gratitude and pride for these incredible students. What they brought to life today was beyond beautiful ✨ The craftsmanship, the storytelling, the intention… every detail in their costumes spoke.

To have @misscocomurray join us as a Moko Jumbie (after the students spent weeks learning the history and meaning) was such a powerful, full-circle moment. You could feel the excitement, the connection, the respect. Thank you for showing up and representing so fully.

And to @cosmos.king thank you for your energy, your presence, and your continued dedication. You held the space and elevated the experience in the way only you can.

Deep gratitude to the @thecreativeschl especially @fashion_tmu and @performancetmu for believing in this work and for creating the space for this showcase to exist.

To my students 🥹 I am so, so proud of you. The risk, the growth, the vision…you showed up fully, and it shows!!

This work, this culture… I don’t take it lightly. To be entrusted with the opportunity to share it, to teach the history, to guide hands through wire bending, to center storytelling; it is truly a blessing. An honour.

Our week of benu closed out yesterday and it’s been nothing but magical and healing over the last number of weeks.

Still feeling the spirits from our ancestors from Carnival: They Can’t Steal Our Joy premiere.

Watching the film in community—seeing people tear up, laugh, reflect, and connect—was unforgettable. 💛 There’s something so powerful about watching a film like this together.

From strangers becoming family to shared laughs and layered reflections, the energy in the room was undeniable.
