Can's yoga with all the sass, Madonna included, a game until every name stuck, and then the quiet: the breath leading, all of us following her. One long hug to close.

40. 🥂✨

Still trying to wrap my head around the fact that I’m actually 40. Honestly, 33 still feels more believable. 😂

But what I do know is how incredibly lucky I feel to have celebrated this new chapter surrounded by so many beautiful people, in both Amsterdam and Istanbul. ❤️

Thank you to everyone who came, celebrated, danced, laughed, hugged, and made these days so special. And to those who couldn’t be there but sent their love: I felt it. 🫶

And so… Step 1: first glimpses of the new project I started working on during the ATLAS residency.

Despite all the reading, thinking, and dreaming about reviving / queering folklore, the residency took a very unexpected turn: the choreography of an ADHD, dopamine-deprived, burnt-out nervous system entered the room. 🫠

But then, during the last two days, a familiar ghost came to visit: folklore.

It came back as a ghost: my childhood memories of folklore in (a different) Türkiye, encounters with strangers on dance floors, kisses under disco balls, homesickness and grief, a paralysed body because of the alienation… and a museum-ified folklore trying to resurrect itself through my very tired body.

Our nervous systems are simply asking for the same things folklore has always known how to hold: joy, togetherness, being with others, moving together, and opening up to the moment.

For step 2, I AM SOOOOO EXCITED. 🐦‍🔥
And slightly terrified. Which, honestly, feels promising. 👀

A huge thank you to my mentor Christopher (@formedview @christopher_matthews_choreo) for helping us keep our eyes open and embody joy throughout this entire month, and to @fondspodiumkunsten for making this adventure possible. 🫀

Deep gratitude to my partner (Dj) in crime, Marianna (@mariannasfyridi) and to the lovely Eda Er (@edaer.me) for sharing a piece of her world with me. ❤️

And to Soula, my komşu, (@soulanotos) for inviting me to tell a story about rhythm and music… a text I wrote months ago that unexpectedly became the backbone of this project, resurfacing exactly when I needed it.

And to all my friends at the residency: every conversation, every exchange, everything we shared became a practice in holding joy. Magic, magic, magic…

Honestly, what an experience. People, bodies, workshops, performances, connections, laughters, catching the moments, highs, nervous breakdowns, heat, cuddles, and… joy and care. That was the practice: feeling the joy and showing the care at ATLAS program @impulstanz_festival w/ the dear beautiful mentor @formedview 🧸🎀

The kind of joy that shakes your pelvis, wakes up your whole body, and leaves you completely open to the world.

✨ Meet the artist … Can Bora! ✨

Can Bora is a queer artist and yoga instructor working with performance, video and bodywork. For fifteen years, one question has driven his practice: how do we connect — with ourselves, with each other, with the world around us?

He layers movement, image and text to create encounters you don't just watch but feel. Making art and teaching yoga are the same thing for him: creating space to truly be present together.

He's here because AQAF does exactly that — a place where queer communities can imagine freedom and connection. Not just between people, but with everything that lives.

A heartfelt thank you to @fondspodiumkunsten for making it possible for me to join the ATLAS Programme @impulstanz_festival this summer through their Travel Grant. 🤍

For the next month, I’ll be immersed in a new artistic research where the fierce rhythms of Black Sea horon, the unheard voice of an albino whale, the rawness of a rugged landscape, and the possibility of tenderness come together. 🌊🌀🐋⛰️

Finding freedom within a normative structure such as folklore feels quite paradoxical…

Yet the collective energy, the goosebumps from the drums, and my inner “Yoncimik” (let’s say the Britney Spears of Turkish pop at the time) opened a completely different portal.

When dear neighbor (komşu) @soulanotos invited me to a curated evening called “Music in Me” @theaterkikker , I wrote this story. An entangled story of a little Turkish body moving between ballet, folklore, 23 April (National Sovereignty and Children’s Day 🇹🇷) celebrations, “old Turkey,” and the fragile question of belonging…

It was a night of feeling at home with all the artists and with Soula’s presence itself.

Even though folklore today is often tied to national image-making and musealization, there is so much more to it than that—as also explored in “Henna Night Reimagined.” I see folkloric dances as something beyond representation: a practice of attunement that helps us connect beyond categories, even including a wider ecology.

Next step: bringing Black Sea figures to @impulstanz_festival ATLAS program, to enter into sharper mountains and wilder waves 🌊⛰️✨
