In the same week in which Ethan Pirigyi ’26 was competing for the United States National Team at the World Rowing U19 Championships in Europe, middle school students from throughout Western New York hit the water at our perennially popular CHS Rowing Camp.

There was another great turnout as the young rowers enjoyed their first rowing experience or enhanced their skills on the water with one of the nation’s best programs.

Coach Jacob Filby ‘14 and President of Rowing Tom Flaherty, along with current Crusader rowers, led the instruction and coaching.

Youngsters saw time on rowing machines at the home of CHS Rowing, the Buffalo Scholastic Rowing Association, and did training runs on the Buffalo River to Canalside and back.

On Thursday, coaches and current rowers greeted camp attendees at BSRA’s Patrick Paladino Memorial Boathouse with news that Pirigyi and the U.S. Men’s Eight had qualified that morning in Bulgaria for Sunday’s world championship final, where the crew would go on to take the silver medal.

These great images were captured by CHS Digital Media photographer Dean Gracie ‘27 (@gracie_prod).

Ethan Pirigyi ’26 will row for a world championship on Sunday.

Pirigyi and the United States Under-19 National Team Men’s Eight earned a spot in Sunday’s final during Thursday’s heats at the World Rowing U19 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

Sunday’s Men’s Eight A Final is at 3:05 a.m. (10:05 a.m. in Bulgaria).

Pirigyi, a Buffalo native who will row at Brown University, is in the 7 seat for the U.S. Men’s Eight. He is at the far left in the team photo.

Pirigyi was selected for the eight after being one of 26 athletes invited by USRowing to the United States Under-19 National Team Selection Camp this summer in Chula Vista, California.

In Thursday’s semifinal, the U.S. was second behind power Great Britain in the opening 500 meters and stayed with them until a charge from Croatia, which finished second. The third-place finish in 5:48.07 was the fourth-fastest time among nine nations across the two heats and it qualified the U.S. as one of the six boats in Sunday’s final.

Last year, Isaiah Aljuwani ’25 of Kenmore and Liam Feeney ’25 of West Seneca were part of the U19 National Team Men’s Eight at the world championships in Trakai, Lithuania, where the U.S. finished second in the B Final, recording the fifth-fastest time among nine nations.

Pirigyi is a three-year member of the CHS Senior Eight who was part of 2025 Scholastic National and Canadian National Championships in the Eight, both firsts for the CHS program. He was the senior captain for this year’s team, winning three state championships and helping lead the Crusaders to another spring of outstanding finishes against elite national and Canadian competition.

CHS Rowing will again have a Crusader helping the United States take on the world.

Ethan Pirigyi ’26 of Buffalo has been named to the United States Under-19 National Team and will row in the Men’s Eight at this summer’s World Rowing U19 Championships in Bulgaria.

Last year, Isaiah Aljuwani ’25 of Kenmore and Liam Feeney ’25 of West Seneca were part of the U19 National Team Men’s Eight at the world championships in Trakai, Lithuania.

This year’s World Rowing U19 Championships will be held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria from Aug. 1-9.

Pirigyi, who will attend and row for Brown University in the fall, is in the 7 seat of the Men’s Eight (he is the second rower from the right, wearing a brown Brown hat, in the two additional photos).

Pirigyi was one of 26 athletes invited by USRowing to the United States Under-19 National Team Selection Camp this summer in Chula Vista, California.

Athletes competed for a spot at the team at the camp, which began June 22 and runs through July 31 at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center

The Canisius High School Varsity Eight recorded the program’s best finish in 15 years this weekend at the 2026 USRowing Youth National Championships.

CHS improved two spots from its 2025 national ranking as the crew finished 17th nationally at Nathan Benderson Park in Bradenton, Florida.

The eight was also the fifth-fastest high school program at the regatta, which includes both scholastic and club programs.

The crew of Oliver Reynolds ’26, Patrick Basil ’26, Hagen Leuthe ’28, Brodie Vitko ’27, Von Kramer ’27, Joe Cheney ’26, Zack Benczkowski ’26, Ethan Pirigyi ’26, and coxswain Joey Castiglione ’27 led wire-to-wire and defeated Saratoga Rowing Association by 0.38 seconds to win the Third-Level Final and secure a 17th place finish.

Canisius reversed the results from May’s New York State Championships, where Saratoga finished ahead of CHS by 4.5 seconds.

In the Under-16 Coxed Quad event, the freshmen crew of Parker Stafford, Caspian Gustafson, Rylan Siuta, Lincoln Jacobs and Joseph Gorino improved throughout the regatta en route to a top-10 finish.

The crew rallied after a 16th-place showing in the time trial and an 8th-place finish in their semifinal, turning the tides in the B Final to finish second, good for 10th overall.

This is the best finish for CHS in the U16 Coxed Quad event. This 10th-place finish ranked them second in terms of scholastic, high school programs.

The Crusaders will return to action in late August for their preseason training in the hopes of continuing to improve their national ranking year over year.

CHS Rowing senior captain Ethan Pirigyi ’26 has been invited to the United States Under-19 National Team Selection Camp this summer.

Pirigyi is one of 26 athletes headed to the camp, hosted by USRowing in Chula Vista, California from June 22-July 31.

Those at the camp at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center will compete for a spot on the team that will represent the United States at the World Rowing U19 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria from Aug. 1-9.

Pirigyi, of Buffalo, is a three-year member of the CHS Senior Eight who was part of 2025 Scholastic National and Canadian National Championships in the Eight, both firsts for the CHS program. He has also won three state championships and additional Canadian national titles and is also second all-time for 2k erg score at Canisius.

Pirigyi will attend and row for Brown University in the fall.

“Ethan is among the highest caliber student-athlete I have ever worked with and one of the finest athletes, not just rowers, ever produced at Canisius High School,” said CHS Rowing Coach Jacob Filby ’14.

"Where we are programmatically – competing for major varsity national championships for the past three years – does not happen without Ethan and his teammates, all of whom he helps bring along and they collectively have raised the standard for what it means to be on the rowing team.

"The team and I could not be more proud of him and we are aiming to finish this season together with an effort that he can be proud to finish his high school career with before embarking on the next step. I am eager to watch him earn a spot and represent the United States on the world stage."

In the second photo are his parents Bryan and Dominique and his sister Sophia, a member of the University at Minnesota rowing team.

Last summer, Isaiah Aljuwani ’25 of Kenmore and Liam Feeney ’25 of West Seneca – also part of last year’s national championship eight – were both selected for the U.S. National Team Under-19 National Team Selection Camp and went on to represent the U.S. at the world championships in Trakai, Lithuania.

CHS Rowing stands out at states – again.

It was another outstanding performance for the Crusaders as CHS won three state titles at the New York State High School Championships on Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs this past weekend.

Out of their 10 events, the Crusaders earned a medal in seven of the grand finals.

On Saturday, Canisius posted a scholastic sweep of the Men’s Pair, finishing in the gold, silver, and bronze medal positions scholastically as the Crusaders placed first, second, fourth, fifth and 10th overall.

The state meet includes scholastic crews that represent individual high schools (like CHS) as well as club crews which include students from various schools within a region.

The senior combination of Ethan Pirigyi ’26 and Oliver Reynolds ’26 led the second-place crew of Von Kramer ’27 and Brodie Vitko ’27..Canisius has won the Pair each year going back to 2022.

On Sunday’s racing, Canisius finished second scholastically in the Varsity and Second Varsity Eights for the third consecutive year. Both crews qualified for the Youth National Championships in Sarasota, Florida for the second year in a row.

After racing in the Eight, the Varsity Four of Pirigyi, Reynolds, Benczkowski and Vitko posted a 15-second win in the final race of the day – Canisius has now won the Varsity Four three years running.

Read much more at our Facebook page & canisiussports.com

Canisius will next head to the South Niagara Invitational Regatta in Welland, Ontario, on Friday and Saturday.
