CHS Rowing raced this past weekend at the 61st Head of the Charles Regatta, the largest three-day regatta in the world.

Nearly 12,000 athletes ranging from high school, collegiate, master and national team crews competed over the course of the weekend on the Charles River in Boston.

In Sunday’s Youth Eight race, which saw both club and scholastic crews compete, CHS finished 24th out of 85 crews behind Von Kramer ’27, Brodie Vitko ’27, Linden Serbinowski ’27, Rylan Siuta ’29, Collin Harper ’28, Elliott Embow ’28, Hagen Leuthe ’28, Stas Ryskin ’27 and coxswain Joseph Castiglione ’27.

Canisius was ninth among scholastic crews in the event, which was won by St. Paul’s School of London.

Canisius has improved each year in this event, finishing 47th in 2021, followed by finishes of 46th, 34th, and 26th before this weekend’s 24th.

“We have a lesser experienced racing group this year, so to post a higher finish than last year is positive,” said coach Jacob Filby ’14. “I am eager to see how they develop over the final weeks of the fall season before we progress into our winter conditioning.”

During Saturday’s racing at the Head of the Charles, coxswain Filby and the crew from Connecticut’s Island Racing Team won the Women’s Senior-Master Four for the second year in a row.

The entire CHS Rowing team will head to Philadelphia this weekend to finish their fall season at the 56th Head of the Schuylkill Regatta.

In the same week in which Ethan Pirigyi ’26 was competing for the United States National Team at the World Rowing U19 Championships in Europe, middle school students from throughout Western New York hit the water at our perennially popular CHS Rowing Camp.

There was another great turnout as the young rowers enjoyed their first rowing experience or enhanced their skills on the water with one of the nation’s best programs.

Coach Jacob Filby ‘14 and President of Rowing Tom Flaherty, along with current Crusader rowers, led the instruction and coaching.

Youngsters saw time on rowing machines at the home of CHS Rowing, the Buffalo Scholastic Rowing Association, and did training runs on the Buffalo River to Canalside and back.

On Thursday, coaches and current rowers greeted camp attendees at BSRA’s Patrick Paladino Memorial Boathouse with news that Pirigyi and the U.S. Men’s Eight had qualified that morning in Bulgaria for Sunday’s world championship final, where the crew would go on to take the silver medal.

Ethan Pirigyi ’26 WINS SILVER for TEAM USA at the WORLD ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Pirigyi and the United States Under-19 National Team Men’s Eight earned silver in Sunday’s final at the World Rowing U19 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

Pirigyi, a Buffalo native who will row at Brown University, rowed from the 7 seat for the U.S. Men’s Eight, which finished second to world power Great Britain, which won gold for the third straight year in 5:33.84.

The U.S., operating from the outside lane (lane six) had a tremendous second half of the race to catch and pass Germany for the silver. The U.S. trailed Germany by 2 seconds at the halfway point of the 2,000-meter race but surged to beat them by about 3/4 of a second (5:36.46 to 5:37.22).

“I am extremely honored to represent Canisius and the United States on the world stage,” Pirigyi said today from Belgium.

“To come away with a second-place finish is a product of the work the entire team put in this season and I would not have been able to succeed without the support of my teammates, family, friends, as well as Coach (Jacob) Filby and Coach (Tom) Flaherty.”

The silver was the best finish for USRowing at these worlds, with the only other medal a bronze.

Last year, Isaiah Aljuwani ’25 of Kenmore and Liam Feeney ’25 of West Seneca were part of the U19 National Team Men’s Eight at the world championships in Trakai, Lithuania, where the U.S. finished second in the B Final. The U.S. did not win a medal at last year’s worlds.

Pirigyi was selected for the eight after being one of 26 invitees to the United States U19 National Team Selection Camp this summer in Chula Vista, California.

Ethan Pirigyi ’26 will row for a world championship on Sunday.

Pirigyi and the United States Under-19 National Team Men’s Eight earned a spot in Sunday’s final during Thursday’s heats at the World Rowing U19 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

Sunday’s Men’s Eight A Final is at 3:05 a.m. (10:05 a.m. in Bulgaria).

Pirigyi, a Buffalo native who will row at Brown University, is in the 7 seat for the U.S. Men’s Eight. He is at the far left in the team photo.

Pirigyi was selected for the eight after being one of 26 athletes invited by USRowing to the United States Under-19 National Team Selection Camp this summer in Chula Vista, California.

In Thursday’s semifinal, the U.S. was second behind power Great Britain in the opening 500 meters and stayed with them until a charge from Croatia, which finished second. The third-place finish in 5:48.07 was the fourth-fastest time among nine nations across the two heats and it qualified the U.S. as one of the six boats in Sunday’s final.

Last year, Isaiah Aljuwani ’25 of Kenmore and Liam Feeney ’25 of West Seneca were part of the U19 National Team Men’s Eight at the world championships in Trakai, Lithuania, where the U.S. finished second in the B Final, recording the fifth-fastest time among nine nations.

Pirigyi is a three-year member of the CHS Senior Eight who was part of 2025 Scholastic National and Canadian National Championships in the Eight, both firsts for the CHS program. He was the senior captain for this year’s team, winning three state championships and helping lead the Crusaders to another spring of outstanding finishes against elite national and Canadian competition.

The Canisius High School Varsity Eight recorded the program’s best finish in 15 years this weekend at the 2026 USRowing Youth National Championships.

CHS improved two spots from its 2025 national ranking as the crew finished 17th nationally at Nathan Benderson Park in Bradenton, Florida.

The eight was also the fifth-fastest high school program at the regatta, which includes both scholastic and club programs.

The crew of Oliver Reynolds ’26, Patrick Basil ’26, Hagen Leuthe ’28, Brodie Vitko ’27, Von Kramer ’27, Joe Cheney ’26, Zack Benczkowski ’26, Ethan Pirigyi ’26, and coxswain Joey Castiglione ’27 led wire-to-wire and defeated Saratoga Rowing Association by 0.38 seconds to win the Third-Level Final and secure a 17th place finish.

Canisius reversed the results from May’s New York State Championships, where Saratoga finished ahead of CHS by 4.5 seconds.

In the Under-16 Coxed Quad event, the freshmen crew of Parker Stafford, Caspian Gustafson, Rylan Siuta, Lincoln Jacobs and Joseph Gorino improved throughout the regatta en route to a top-10 finish.

The crew rallied after a 16th-place showing in the time trial and an 8th-place finish in their semifinal, turning the tides in the B Final to finish second, good for 10th overall.

This is the best finish for CHS in the U16 Coxed Quad event. This 10th-place finish ranked them second in terms of scholastic, high school programs.

The Crusaders will return to action in late August for their preseason training in the hopes of continuing to improve their national ranking year over year.
