The Great Bear Rainforest stretches along British Columbia’s coast, covering more than 6 million hectares of temperate rainforest.⁣
⁣
It’s home to ancient forests, salmon-rich rivers, humpback whales, grizzlies and the rare Kermode, or “spirit,” bear. These forests also store carbon, support Indigenous communities and provide critical habitat for wildlife. It's worth protecting! by @canopyplanet

Deep in the Leuser Ecosystem, Sumatran orangutans still roam alongside tigers, rhinos, and elephants. But this irreplaceable rainforest is under growing pressure from forest loss and development.

There is hope. Local conservation organizations like the Orangutan Information Centre (@yosloic) are restoring forests, rescuing at-risk orangutans, and helping return them to the wild.

Today on World Orangutan Day, we are reminded that protecting this remarkable ecosystem means protecting one of the last great homes of the Sumatran orangutan and giving this critically endangered species a future.

Every year, more than 300 million trees are logged, many from Ancient and Endangered Forests, to make the fabrics in our T-shirts, dresses, and home textiles.

@canopyplanet , a not-for-profit working to transform supply chains that drive deforestation, is changing that. Working with more than 1,000 companies, Canopy helps major brands and the mills that supply them build forest-friendly policies, improve procurement practices and create demand for Next Gen materials made from textile waste and agricultural residues.

Canopy’s Hot Button Report assesses nearly all global man-made cellulosic fibre (MMCF) production, and 79% of producers now hold a green shirt, up from 70% last year and from zero a decade ago. There are now 20 Next Gen product lines on the market, up from 16 in 2025.

The next step is scale. Building 60 million tonnes of Next Gen production capacity by 2033 will take an estimated US$78 billion, and only US$1.5–1.8 billion has been invested industry-wide so far.

As Valerie Langer, Senior Director, Next Gen Transformation at Canopy, points out, brands and innovators are too often going it alone. Scaling circular materials means coordinating across the entire value chain, building supply chain resilience while delivering on climate and sustainability goals.

Also known as the Kermode bear, the “Spirit Bear” is found only in the Great Bear Rainforest, the traditional territory of the Gitga’at, Kitasoo/Xai’xais, and other Indigenous Nations.

But this ancient rainforest faces growing pressure. Industrial logging fragments the forests and habitat these bears depend on, while a changing climate is warming rivers and disrupting salmon runs, a crucial food source for Spirit Bears and countless other species.

Protecting the Great Bear Rainforest means protecting the interconnected ecosystems that sustain wildlife, communities, and forests.

With the right inputs, paper packaging can be part of the solution. 📦🌲

More than half of the world’s paper and board production now goes into boxes, wraps and other forms of packaging. As demand grows, sourcing matters more than ever.

That is where Pack4Good, led by Canopy, comes in: helping brands and producers move towards lower-impact fibres and away from Ancient and Endangered Forests.

With support from the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, Pack4Good is helping companies move away from high-carbon, biodiverse forest fibre and increase demand for lower-impact, Next Gen alternatives made from waste inputs like wheat straw.

To date, 449 companies have joined Pack4Good, while eight global packaging producers have adopted policies to remove Ancient and Endangered Forests from their supply chains and prioritise Next Gen Solutions.

Protecting forests can also start with changing what everyday products are made from. Learn more: @‌canopyplanet

3 million hectares. No clearcuts. No power lines. Not even a road.

Dene K’éh Kusān is one of the biggest, wildest places left on Earth—and a refuge for grizzly bears, Stone’s sheep and millions of migratory birds. While caribou are struggling in other parts of British Columbia, seven thriving herds can be found here.

The Kaska First Nations have spent years working toward their vision to protect Dene K’éh Kusān for future generations of British Columbians to enjoy.

Now, there’s a rare opportunity to help make that protection permanent.

Join the Biggest Wildest campaign to support efforts to protect this extraordinary landscape.
