Howdy, it’s ya boy Mitch, and to those new here, welcome to Cappstract Art.

I’m an abstract impressionist artist based out of Asheville.

Back in 2020, I fell 5 stories, went into a coma, and woke up with a chunk of my skull removed. My first request when I came back online? Art supplies. Art became the way I understood pain, regulated emotion, and rebuilt myself. It saved my life.

In 2022, I moved to Asheville and started doodling on downtown sidewalks with nothing but my dog, my forestry degree, and the belief that I was here to do something meaningful with my art.

After a bit, I lost my job as the Director of Fun as a result Hurricane Helene, so I doubled (maybe tripled) down on my dream and went full-time. I’ve gotten back up more times than I can count. Two, at least.

Now I create live, I collaborate, I lead workshops, and I make emotionally/ecologically expressive art for weddings, retreats, events, and just regular humans who feel things.

My groovy goal is to completely cover the world in dope doodles and weird wiggles starting right here.

I made a lil music video for your Friday! I finished these #goldengoose shoes the other day for a commission, and they go so silly hard.

These are acrylic marker on genuine, Italian leather shoes by @goldengoose

I made a playlist to go along w these bad boys so I could nail the motif that Robin gave me.

Been reflecting on my journey as of late as I feel out what it means to be a professional artist. It’s been a trip, lemme tell ya. Lemme get that trigger warning out there now, cause it ain’t been a painless road by any means.

Back in 2020, I took a topple off a 5 story building, but that’s hardly news to most folks. I exploded my skull, broke my face, bit down so hard that my teeth exploded into my mouth. All my appendages broke as well, requiring reconstructive surgery, creating the bionic artist that you know and love (me). Well, all my appendages broke besides my drawing arm. Coincidence? Seems unlikely.

Immediately, upon waking up from my coma, I asked for art supplies; paints, paintbrushes, a sketchbook, and canvases. My folks helped out (huge love and respect for walking that path with me) (also big sorry that you had to go through that).

Artistic expression was instrumental for my recovery process, and I find myself taking a step back at my life and appreciating all of it. The fall, the flood, all that pain.

It catalyzed a rebirth. The old Mitch died, and I was reborn with a perspective that’s proven to be the most valuable takeaway; if I already survived the impossible and came back into my earthy body, it’s for a darn good reason. I’ve already died, so what do I have to lose if I take a chance on my art? Whatever happens, it can’t hurt as bad as that big bonk.

Then the 1000 year flood came through town, and I lost my old job in it. Things lined up, and I’m not one to pass up an opportunity to take a leap of faith.

Now, here I am! The past hurt, but I’ve got cool scars, a beautiful story, and an invaluable perspective.

Stay tuned! If we ignore all the stuff that’s gone wrong, I’ve had nothing but wins. I’ll tell you what, I’m up right now! I might just be doodling for a dollar per minute but damn does it feel so unbelievably good with all this context!

After 4+ years of following Rum Jungle’s music and finding resonance with their “mindful dirtbag” point of view, i finally got to see the boys live

I was up in it. Singing all the words back to every song in the 3PM Atlanta heat was cathartic.

I am massively grateful for their music. If you’ve collected any art from me in the last 4 years, there’s a good chance that you have art inspired by them.

I was able to snag a setlist, then I drew along with their entire discography up until now all around it, commemorating the experience.

As a working artist, it’s important for me to make art for myself while I find way to monetize and find the next step forward.

It’s also important to let yourself fanboy over other artists every so often.

I cried 🅱️ig 🅱️oh tears when they played this song, Quiet When Your Listening as their second to last song of the set, as the message finally connected.

Shoutout to Found Sounds for bringing myself and the rest of the groovy gang out to the woods on a Wednesday!

It started as a handful of homies setting up art stuff, but turned into a mini-fest by the end!

Finding hella based environmental stewards being gathered in the forest for the goal of music appreciation makes me quite happy.

I love it here! I’m having a blast!

I’m doing clothes now? That’s crazy.

Almost as crazy as paying a vendor fee for a market that got cancelled as I pulled up.

What am I gonna do? Go home? Nah. Me and @jodie.koyote are busking in the park with the fine people of Asheville anyways.
