What IF the murder you had to solve was...your own?

Lou is a happily married mother of an adorable toddler. She's also the victim of a serial killer. A unique government program *brought back* five victims of a local serial killer and she's grateful. For the second chance. But, as the NEW Lou adapts to her old routines, questions keep coming up. Questions about what happened before her death and how much trust she should have in the people around her.

I genuinely enjoyed this mystery. I don't read a ton of them, so I am usually surprised by the inevitable twist. As I was this time. The questions Lou asks are the questions we all as. How well can you know yourself? And how well can you know anyone?

Have you read this? What did you think of the ending?

I'm not kidding. I've been waiting years for a sequel to The Historian and now that it's finally here, and I got a review copy?!, I can barely stand to not be reading it. SO. HAPPY.

I first read Dracula for RIP in...I have no idea when it was. It was YEARS ago. And it immediately became a favorite book that I have read several times since. I got a new full cast production to listen to this year and, as I say in the graphic, it is perfection.

School is back in and my reading has dwindled? Even more? If that's possible? I'm standing at 14 books read this year. It's the worst since I started recording my reading in 2001. To say I'm sad about it is an understatement. My classes are fun but geez. I wish I had time and focus to do a little more reading.

I did start listening to My Murder by Katie Williams on my commute and it completely ensnared me from the first minute. Read by Rebecca Lowman ( a favorite narrator), this story of a cloned murder victim is hard to put down. I even listened while doing homework, which isn't easy!

Now, let's just hope I can keep up the momentum and maybe even manage to read something else next!

What are you reading or listening to?

Oh, and this is my first read for #ripxxi!

*SPOTLIGHT ON : MORSEL BY CARTER KEANE

Morsel is a slim book, clocking in at 198 pages for the hardcover. It was first published April 14, 2026.

From the publisher: "The Blair Witch Project meets The Ritual, with a generous helping of The Menu, in Morsel, a delicious folk horror novella perfect for fans of T. Kingfisher, Cassandra Khaw, and Paul Tremblay.

Lou did what the children of parents with back-breaking, poor paying jobs are supposed to do; pulled up her bootstraps, went to college, and got an office job with coworkers who won’t stop talking about their multi-level marketing scheme disguised as self-betterment.

Determined to lift her ill mother out of poverty before it's too late, and in the spirit of climbing the corporate ladder, Lou accepts an assignment in the rural hills of Ohio. She quickly finds herself stranded in the middle of nowhere with a sabotaged truck, a dog she’s determined to keep safe, and something stalking her through the ancient Appalachian woods.

If she can’t escape the woods in time, she’ll come face to face with the fact that her job isn’t the only thing that wants to eat her alive.

Morsel is a chilling testament to the burden of generational poverty and the all-consuming nature of capitalism, where the monster and the monstrous, in the end, are not the same."

Many thanks to #netgalley for the eARC of #Morsel. Unfortunately, the book wasn't for me, but I hope you'll give it a try. The premise sounds like it has the potential to be great; I loved The Menu, but haven't seen the other two.

One rare cool day in July, and an old gal's thoughts turn to autumn and autumn reads. I've been feeling a big itch to reread some favorite fall books and I couldn't resist making a list. I have read, and loved, all of these - in many cases multiple times.

Autumn Favorites:
~ We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson (fantastic in audio)
~ The Changeling by Victor Lavalle
~ Dracula by Bram Stoker (several fantastic audio productions as well, my favorite features Tim Curry!)
~ The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas
~ The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova (audio fantastic)
~ Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
~ King Sorrow by Joe Hill
~ The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
~ Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman
~ Salem's Lot by Stephen King
~ The Secret History by Donna Tartt
~ The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
~ Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury
~ The Staircase in the Woods by Chuck Wendig
~ Come Tumbling Down (Wayward Children #2) by Seanan McGuire
~ The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters (Audio is amazing)
~ Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
~ The Woman in Black by Susan Hill (audio is so creepy)
~ The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien (the Andy Serkis audio is fantastic)
~ The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe
~ The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffeneggar
~ Blood on her Tongue by Johanna van Veen
~ Monsters We Defy by Leslye Penelope
~ The September House by Carissa Orlando
~ Peter and Max by Bill Willingham (the audio is read by Wil Wheaton, it's so so good)
~ The City of the Good Death by Priyanka Champaneri
~ Horrorstor by Grady Hendrix (truly, all his books are perfect for fall)
~ The Phantom Forest by Liz Kerin

What are your favorite books to read in autumn? Are you as ready as I am?

Spotlight On: Dark is When the Devil Comes by Daisy Pearce

I read Pearce’s Something in the Walls last year and knew I had to read her new book out this year. However, I have been in a deep reading slump and really haven’t been able to read anything much this year. I thought I’d spotlight this book (and probably others in the future) that I really want to read and maybe it’ll give me the push I need to sit down and read something!

“Full of creeping dread and suffocating unease, Dark Is When the Devil Comes is an atmospheric and chilling novel from Something in the Walls author Daisy Pearce.”

Read if you like:
• Horror with a side of thriller
• LOVE uncomfortable sibling relationships
• atmospheric setting in the English countryside

Other books compared to Dark is When the Devil Comes:
• Something in the Walls by Daisy Pearce
• The Caretaker by Marcus Kliewer
• These Familiar Walls by CJ Dotson
• The Night Sister by Jennifer McMahon

Have you read Dark is When the Devil Comes? Do I need to push it up the TBR pile? I think I probably do! This sounds like a banger!

Thank you to NetGalley and #MinotaurBooks for the eARC.

Currently reading?

Nothing. I'm reading nothing. I'm listening to podcasts. Because I can't get into anything.

I was looking through my Kindle yesterday and everything and nothing appealed. I want to read so many books, but I just can't seem to get started. So I sat and I thought about what I was craving.

Is cozy thriller a thing? Others have asked on Reddit, some I did not agree with (Monk and Robot a cozy thriller? Cozy yes, thriller...um...no?) but some sounded intriguing.

From the books I own, I think these might fit the bill:

The Enchanted Greenhouse by Sarah Beth Durst
Tea and Alchemy by Sharon Lynn Fisher
The Possession of Alba Díaz by Isabel Cañas
What Stalks the Deep by T. Kingfisher
Her Little Flowers by Shannon Morgan
This Book Will Bury Me by Ashley Winstead
The Sisters of Crimson House by Melissa Anderson Sweazy
These Walls Remember by Del Sandeen

or maybe a favorite cozy reread is in order? Like:

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters
We Have Always Live in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

So help? Any suggestions? What books have busted a slump for you? A book that gave you cozy vibes while also being a page turner. I need help.

*** Thoughts on Raising Hare by Chloe Dalton ***

With all that's *gestures broadly* going on in the world, I have found myself with the attention span of a gnat. I feel like I've tried every book in my Kindle and house, and nothing is sticking. Until I tried this one.

Comfort reads FTW!

Raising Hare was just what I needed. Why do I forget how much I love memoirs of this ilk? I learned so much about hares (since I didn't know anything), the prose is gorgeous, and it invited me to slow down, and savor...life. What more can we ask for when we're depressed because of the state of the world and seeking comfort?

I listened to the audiobook read by Louise Brealey (perhaps best known as Molly on Sherlock?) and she's a delight. I need her to read more books like this please.

Read/listen if you love:
🐇 heartwarming stories about animals
🐇 learning new things about nature and animals
🐇 being read a lovely story by a lovely reader
🐇 comfort reads

Similar books:
🐻 Down from the Mountain: the Life and Death of a Grizzly Bear by Bryce Andrews
🦊 Fox and I: an Uncommon Friendship by Catherine Raven
🐦 H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald (wonderful for reading or listening, I've done both)
🦉 The Owl Who Liked Sitting on Caesar: Living with a Tawny Own by Martin Windrow
🐦 Mind of a Raven by Bernd Heinrich
🐙 Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery

What are some of your favorite comfort reads? I may need more.

I read Vampires of el Norte last year and immediately knew I had to read Cañas had and would ever write. I’ve been an epic slump this year, so I thought turning to another book by her would work for me. And booooy did it!

The Hacienda was Cañas’ first book and I’m so surprised by that because I am hard pressed to find anything wrong with it. A gothic romance set in 19th century Mexico that examines love, race, class, history, folklore, religion, power, and more, The Hacienda has much to recommend it! And the Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier vibes were strong!

The audiobook is chef’s kiss. The narrators were superb.

Read if you like:
• atmospheric haunted houses…with an attitude
• hot sexy priests who may or may not also be witches
• history with a side of folklore
• luscious prose with a haunting atmosphere
• ambiguous endings
• need a book for Hot Goth Summer

Similar books include:
• Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
• The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
• Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
• The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters
• The Woman in White by Susan Hill
• Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

Have you read this? What did you think? Any recommendations for something like it? I need more!

✨📚✨BOOK REVIEW✨📚✨

I’m on a mission. To read everything Daniel Kraus has read or ever will read. I loved Whalefall. Then Angel Down sealed the deal. I have loved everything I’ve read so far, and The Monster Variations is no exception.

I’ve never read The Body by Stephen King, or seen Stand By Me, the movie based on it. However, it entered the collective cultural knowledge of the day and I know enough about it to recognize that The Monster Variations has similar themes and construction. This ‘Coming of Age’ novel wowed me with its writing and the relationships of the boys with each other as well as the ones between the sons and their fathers. And the mysteries at the heart of the novel kept the pages turning.
