for pitchfork magazine, i condensed 6770 words of my feelings about mal blum’s zesty breakup album, “the villain”, down to 677. anyone who's loved and lost a gemini will find this genius album healing. i wasn't able to include some of my favorite precedent studies like about how the villain’s lyrical throughline of tiredness perfectly captures the uniquely trans bone-deep fatigue of constant vigilance and self defense of being in community with a vituperative ex under an abusive federal regime in an extractive oligarchy~~~ or how lethargy in the lines “i tried my best” in “a small request” and “maybe i'll go back to bed” in “truth is out there” play up the character of the weary villain. @malblum is in conversation with dancer yve laris cohen, photographer soraya zaman, illustrators #lacryboy and lino arruda, and other laboring "villainous" artists of the transmasculine canon, especially those working with an idea called "roachification": intentional play with hairiness, laziness, villainy, messiness, and other traits that unapologetically refuse feminine docility and upkeep or how reclaimed and exaggerated, those same non-feminine traits become a source of affirming expression like how “i’m tired/so, whatever/you want” in “killer” lands as deliberately abrasive and is achored by gorgeous @audreyotherway riffs, or how a waggish tone on “must get lonely” similarly challenges gendered norms of respectability, or how blum sings with the millennial panache of ada lea’s “damn” and the anthemic slacker vim of beck’s “loser” or my take on blum's excruciatingly brilliant “gemini v. cancer”, but here's my favorite line: "i guess you really only cared/about your brand in the end" 🗡️ please buy "the villain" on bandcamp and make time for the zesty boy on tour (8/23 in portland at polaris hall). no more mister nice blum. link in biooo well done to queer/trans-owned label @getbetterrecords and producer jessica boudreaux of @itspetclub - went to her @summercannibals show @sirentheater sapphic comedy nite instead of killing myself in 2017, definitely the right call... as patty griffin says, time will do the talkin. by @captainwhitworth

My first time in the Oregonian! I wrote about a redesign of arts funding that will almost certainly never happen but is fun as a thought exercise. Link to article in bio 🍁 💌📝🎭🎪 by @captainwhitworth
