“Constantly falling apart:” A conversation about object permanence with disabled artist Carly Riegger

Written by @eocieslik @whitehotmagazine

In this interview, Riegger discussed the importance of employing disabled art workers and artists while also avoiding essentializing disabled artists to their identities or seeing them as representatives for the disability community. Riegger also discussed how art created by disabled artists that explores disability often negotiates ephemerality in ways that disrupts the way museums and galleries promote permanence of their collection.

Riegger: "Material is really important to me, so a lot of the ways that I display things are very precarious and can just fall apart very easily, and to me, that’s speaking to a lot of chronically ill experiences. That directly clashes with museums in how they acquire and showcase art and so it’s been really interesting to imagine a new experience for a space where maybe things intentionally fall apart or are really pushing back against how we expect to see artwork."

Wow! Detroit! NCECA! Thank you for coming to our show Outpour. I'm very excited for how the show turned out and how many people came to our reception.

Every time community comes together, we become stronger, we show up for each other, we celebrate each other. I'm looking forward to more organizing in the future! @artists.w.disabilities

NCECA was special to me this year as I grew up in Michigan going to Detroit as a kid and teen. It's amazing to see how it has transformed over the years. My family was also able to come see the work in person too!

Hoping to see everyone next year 🥰 taken in Detroit, Michigan by @car.riegger

I am ecstatic to share that I will be joining College of DuPage as Adjunct Faculty in Ceramics! @art.at.cod

Now that I have graduated, I will be moving near Chicago, focusing on teaching sculpting the figure and building my disability-arts practice. The excitement and gratitude I feel to be moving for this is immeasurable.

I will be teaching ceramics 1 and figurative ceramic sculpture! I also will be looking to community arts spaces to teach figurative work to the Chicago community at large.

I am so thankful for my time at UW-Madison and excited for the next chapter. by @car.riegger

Many thank yous are needed:

Excited for the next steps ahead (to be announced soon), but I am so sad to be leaving my community in Madison ❤️❤️❤️ taken in Madison, Wisconsin by @car.riegger

Foam pedestals with mirrorized glass vessels 🪞✨️

Within/Without
Mirrorized Glass, Foam
Glass Collaboration with Matthew Everett and Carolyn Spears
2026

I reflect on the history of encapsulating disabled bodies. Containing, stopping time, keeping them as a spectacle for able-bodied consumption. These glass vessels are mirrorized to only show the viewers reflection and a way to not let them see within. Vital organs with which we all need to live, these vessels reveal a deeper truth of the body, while only letting viewers to view so much. This boundary is a direct response to the Mutter Museum and the history of containing disabled bodies for collections and curiosities that has happened across the world.

ID: cylinder light yellow-ish foam pedestals holding mirrorized, shiny glass vessels on top. Each of the vessels is a different organ: stomach, heart, and lungs. The foam pedestals have a slight bend in them from the weight of the glass on top. The glass objects are each about 12 x 12 x 12 inches and the foam pedestals are 4 ft in height.
