i’m starting a talk show……! tune into HUSH! live on @lowergrandradio on second sundays from 8:30-10pm 🔊 listen to me talk with asian american musicians shaping the sonic landscape of the bay area, exploring music making as a site of cultural formation + political action 🕊️

i think it means something when we make music. half a century later i’m still thinking of us — my (our) people, dispossessed and displaced by us imperialists enacting violence in all forms: on the land, on the home, on the spirit. upon resettlement our people face a second kind of violence. arguably subtler, but insidious. in exchange for the illusion of safety, they ask for silence.

what does it mean, then, to make a sound? it’s been on my mind, what it means for asian american music to exist, how making sound is a refusal to bargain for fake peace with obedience, complacency, and subservience. music not necessarily as luxury (we can complicate this later), but as survival, sustenance, mourning, protest, celebration, reclamation.

but really i’m just curious. what music were we making then? what music are we making now? given the bay’s specific history with the asian american movement, too, i wonder what it means to be a part of that lineage, what it might mean to honor it.

while scrolling through old pictures i rediscovered this one, my favorite picture of my bà ngoại :) here, in the backyard of my eldest aunt’s house in san gabriel, where i loved spending the holidays growing up. on a bench flanked by her childhood best friend, her nephew, the son of her oldest brother, cậu ba, and max, the pug, sitting so properly behind her cane; in front of the yellow bronco that my parents, and then my cousins, drove away in after their wedding ceremonies, souped up by my cousin who promised that it could eventually be mine.

this year she visited me in a dream while wearing this outfit (signature yellow vest, her favorite color, and that delightful scarf and beanie combo); we stood on the beach and she was facing the sun, towards the ocean, arms crossed behind her back, smiling. it was so warm.

quick field trip to visit the gleeson zine library at usf — thanks @_anniepho_ for the tour, answering all my questions, and for letting me donate some zines to the library 🤓 i’m in academic circulation baby…… !

annie and i decided to throw together a collaborative zine workshop ! this sunday eve ! exploring the question “HOW DID WE GET HERE?”

learn how to make, print, and assemble a “zine-in-a-hurry” — a compilation zine that we hope to start and finish during the workshop.

my summer residency at @batherslibrary is well underway 🌀inspired by the fluidity + vibrancy of vietnam’s creative scene and rooted in my own desires (needs) for deep + honest expression, i’ll be hosting some events at the space under a larger project that i’m calling HẺM 510 (for now, at least).
