I was in my early 20’s the first time I met Charles. He asked me what I thought the piece on his table was. I said “a pie stand?” to which he gasped. The next day, I made him two pies which we sat around picking at for hours, with years of pie dates to follow. I had the privilege of working with Charles here and there, but the greatest privilege of it all was to simply be his friend, to know him and to know myself better in our friendship. Charles brought this beautiful desk over a few months ago and said to use it to finish my degree. I will use it for that and much more. I can see that his generosity was rooted in wanting us to see our potential, to see what he saw in us. Meanwhile, we saw his incredible commitment to his work, all of his beautiful and admiring dogs, and especially to his family and friends. The Charles Hollis Jones legacy amazes me and inspires me to keep going. A huge life built on transparency. CHJ forever💖 by @carb_party

Bit of a blurry photo but today I was thinking about this piece by Christina Favretto at one of the first (2013?) B&B shows, then I saw this photo. It was in a house I shared with Misael in North Miami and the show was called Help You Help Me. Misa and I got into maybe our only fight ever that night (it was about toilet paper and artistic integrity. I’ll spare you for now.) I invited several artists to make a work in the bedroom based on a self help book they chose from a plethora of options donated by Nathaniel at @bookleggerslibrary. Christina made a timeline of my life from birth through my death that went around the entire room, some of it factual and some events like “says “color” for the first time and means it” were just things that, while made up, made sense to her as my friend. I wish I could find more photos of each year, but I really do love the smell of rain on asphalt! Photo is a vintage selfie of mom and I. These early B&B shows were so fun and I’ll never take for granted how lucky I am to make stuff with such great artists and friends. Also, call your mom.

I started with a new therapist who told me that I was “putting the cart before the horse” in our first session. Then, I went to bed and told dream @momisdrawing about it. In this dream, she made a drawing of me frantically trying to put the cart and the horse in their right place. When I woke up, I could see the drawing clearly, which didn’t look anything like this actual drawing that Jiae made of me in a session with my horse-therapist, maybe five minutes after I told her about the dream. by @carb_party

From Sunday, Jan 12th to Sunday, Jan 18th, 10 AM - 4 PM, join for a week of creativity and community support. So far, I know I will be working with the kids on Monday the 13th and Saturday the 18th. If you lost your home in the fires and need alone time to make some calls outside or in your car, I’m more than happy to stay in the space and make art with your kids while you take care of what you need to. I love teaching at Remainders because the possibilities feel endless with all the many materials to explore. Please spread the word! 🩷
