Halloween candy isn’t junk. It’s not bad. It doesn’t make you bad. You don’t need to earn it to enjoy it. Permission to eat all food allows for a better relationship to all foods.

I grew up in a home where after I went trick or treating my mom would hide the candy or put it in a hard to reach place. I always felt guilty around eating “more than I should have.” I made a promise that my children will never experience that and instead learn about listening to their body and body’s wants and needs.

Happy Halloween! Eat the candy!

There’s a lot of conversation right now about women in sports and the way women’s bodies are portrayed.

Female athletes are constantly being told—sometimes subtly, sometimes loudly—that their bodies are part of their performance. That they should be leaner, smaller, stronger, more toned, more “fit,” or look a certain way.

And that pressure can have consequences. We should be talking about this. Not because athletes shouldn’t care about performance. Not because bodies don’t matter in sports. But because athletes deserve to fuel their bodies, respect their bodies, and compete without believing they have to change their bodies to belong.

Really been missing being on the ice so here’s a #tbt❤️ 20 years ago when I had an axel and apparently would do knee slides on the ice 😆

You just never know if someone is losing weight due to illness or maybe they have an eating disorder.

But what’s worse is when we compliment weight loss we continue to send the message that 1. Smaller is better and 2. That the size of our bodies has some significant value to them.

Honestly, there are so many other things we can compliment someone on that has nothing to do with the size of their body.

Recovery with an ED doesn’t happen overnight just like learning a new jump in skating. It takes time and practice.

And even when you feel you’ve mastered this you might get a surprise trigger or in case of skating a slip on an edge that causes you to fall.

You didn’t fail. Your hard work doesn’t go away. The stumble in recovery or a fall on a jump is just a time to learn what happened and how to move forward with your new knowledge.

Recovery isn’t linear and there is no perfection when working through this. Even the best skaters in the world still fall. It’s about how you get up that really matters.

Don’t underestimate a 40 something year old pregnant woman.

I had some big goals for myself this past skating season and a bigger goal in my personal life. I wasn’t sure if I could do it all but I gave it my best and ended up ending my skating season with passing my bronze ice dance tests and meeting my competition goals.

I’m not sure what my skating will look like postpartum so it meant even more to me to meet these skating milestones.

Throughout this process I also re-learned just how incredible my body is. I survived my 1st trimester while taking care of a toddler, working full time and hitting skating goals.

As I am entering my 3rd trimester it is a nice reminder how amazing my body is especially on the days it feels hard to be in this body. This isn’t body positivity it is body gratitude.

#ᴛʙᴛ to my sophomore year @udelaware @udfigureskating . I have almost no memory of this program but majorly impressed I put a lutz in a show program!

What I do remember was that this was during the time I was in the throws of my ED. I am probably considered “normal” size here but behind the scenes I was causing some real damage to my mental and physical health.

Some people may attribute this sport to breeding disordered eating but for me skating was my saving grace. It was one of the things I used to fight my ED because I knew if I continued down this path I’d lose skating.

Love this program and love to see how far I’ve come in my recovery.

Bronze Dances Passed!

So excited to get these dance tests completed. I had a small window to test these dances before… well… I’ll save that news for another post!

Getting to skate to @rilokileyofficial this past season was a dream. And then getting to see them this week @pappyandharriets under the desert stars was heaven.

9 years gone today…

The one positive of carrying grief is knowing that my grief is because of love. If I didn’t experience this love between daughter and mom I’d probably not feel the heaviness I hold now. I guess the pain is worth it.

Dieting is a major risk factor for developing an eating disorder. 20%-35% of people who go on a diet may develop an ED.

Athletes are at a higher risk of developing an eating disorder than the general population with 6-45% of females and 0-19% of males developing an eating disorder.

Coaches and parents need to be aware on how to address nutrition, body image, and the pressures of sport with their athletes. Your best tool is utilizing a registered dietitian, sports psychologist or therapist who specializes in the treatment of eating disorders and body image.
