Sharing in solidarity with folks living in Laurelhurst Park:

It warms our hearts to see energy being poured into the community many of us hold so dearly, and attention paid to a population that is often otherwise invisible.

A “normal” campsite eviction happens 2-10 days after the city posts a notice. Exact sweep intel is rare. Evictions are intentionally opaque; the city anticipates resistance. In this case, HUCIRP reps alerted those of us who serve Laurelhurst, hoping to pass the buck to us to clean and relocate the camp so they wouldn’t have to spend money and time. We immediately stopped by to ask what support they wanted. In doing so, we got their consent to call our community to action.

An eviction defense is not an autonomous direct action. It’s meant to center those at risk, and we fear this message may have been lost in the excitement. The camp residents appreciate beyond belief all of the food, supplies, and camaraderie—but many are uncomfortable with and stressed by aspects of the defense. First, many feel the action has become more of a desire to socialize and feed egos than stand in solidarity with them. Second, the 24-hour presence of loud strangers in their homes feels invasive and excessive. Folks who wished to quietly pack up and leave feel unable to do so under constant surveillance. Third, folks are uneasy with the presence of black bloc, protective gear and heckling of police. Many houseless folks have experienced significant trauma at the hands of police, are not arrestable, and are terrified of police intervention.

Respect quiet hours, don’t yell at cops or neighborhood Karens. We are under public scrutiny, and any consequences will fall on the residents, not us. This is not a time to throw a party—this is a heavy topic and should be treated as such.

Thank you all so much for your support of this action; please keep all houseless comrades in mind after this. Find a camp in your neighborhood and focus on it. Build relationships with those folks, and ask how you can support them best. Offer community and friendship, and community and friendship will be offered in return.

Tomorrow morning houseless people living in Laurelhurst Park are scheduled to be swept. Folks are asking for people to show up to help defend against the sweep between 5am-1pm. We are not the organizers behind this but sharing in solidarity.

[Slide 2: Red square with drawing of tent and fists raised in solidarity. It reads: On Tuesday, November 10th, the Homelessness and Urban Camping Impact Reduction Program will be forcibly evicting about 100 people living peacefully at Laurelhurst park, where they’ve been since before the pandemic. They cite a violation of CDC guidelines as their reason for this escalation, despite the relatively low levels of COVID cases among the houseless population. If the name of the program didn’t clue you in, the folks carrying out this sweep only care about the nearby property owners, and not about the lives of the people living in the camp. We can’t let this happen.]

[Slide 3: Red square with drawing of tent and fists raised in solidarity. It reads: We know for a fact that forced, evictions, or “sweeps”, don’t work. Taking people’s personal belongings away does not make the person disappear. Deprived of their clothing, tents, and personal items, people living outdoors become even more vulnerable to cold weather, illness, stress, and instability in their lives. Breaking up camps also breaks the bonds of community that help folks cope with the stress of houselessness. Homeless people have the same property rights to their possessions as any other person in Oregon, but these rights are often ignored in the process of a sweep, and possessions are often difficult or impossible to get back.]

Update on Fall Budget Monitoring Process (BMP)! Watch today's Fall BMP vote on amendments here: https://youtu.be/nzz79HzVLgI

[Slide 2: Green square that reads: “Wheeler’s budget did not include any cuts to the Portland Police Bureau. Jo Ann Hardesty proposed cuts that total $18m with support from Chloe Eudaly. Over 180 people signed up to testify during the budget hearing.”]

[Slide 3: Green square that reads: “Testimony lasted for almost six hours. Testimony was almost all in support of Hardesty’s amendments. Originally, Wheeler had to leave early but his debate was cancelled and he was able to stay the whole duration.”

Below the phone, the phone number 503-823-3589 is bolded in yellow.

Second slide:
On top of a light, salmon pink background, inside of a light blue speech bubble the phone zap script reads:
Hello my name is ______and I live in the ______ area of Portland.

I am calling on Dan Ryan to vote yeson Jo Ann Hardesty’s Fall BMP proposed amendments. These amendments would cut $18 million from the police budget as well as reinvest city resources into programs that strengthen community care. In the midst of a pandemic, and national uprising against the inherent violence of policing, it is imperative we take bold action now.

In addition to Hardesty’s proposed amendments we urge you to support additional community demands including: defunding tactical and surveillance units, a PPB hiring freeze, ban on crowd control munitions, no overtime for cops, and reinvestment to participatory budgeting processes for community care.

Thank you. by @carenotcopspdx

A sincere thank you to everyone who participated in this project! Due to the immediate and overwhelming rallying of support from our community, we were able to coordinate 600+ volunteers to print, post, and send CARES act stimulus info and forms to 12,000+ people imprisoned in Oregon state prisons.

While Oregon Department of Corrections revealed its complete incompetence in this matter, having neither a plan to distribute the necessary forms and information nor being at all aware of the lawsuit that made funds available to the people in its custody, our network of prison abolitionist organizations came together to provide an opportunity for much-needed material relief to people in Oregon prisons.

We were only able to coordinate this massive action and directly combat the lack of access imprisoned people had to receive their stimulus checks because of Critical Resistance Portland's Write Them All Campaign, a project where volunteers are currently sending individual handwritten letters and a bilingual resource sheet to all imprisoned people in Oregon state prisons.

A sincere thank you to everyone who printed, provided stamps, spread the word, and rallied together to provide this successful support! Thank you to @SnackBlocPDX who provided $500 of resources. Thank you to @DefenseFundPDX who collectively sent 300 letters. Thank you to Dreaming Freedom Practicing Abolition (abolitioniststudy.wordpress.com) who first published the necessary documentation needed for people imprisoned to file for their $1,200.

Keep a close eye out for another, expanded action as we push to send CARES Act stimulus forms and information to a national contact list!

We keep us safe.

For a world without police.

For a world without prisons.

Imprisoned people are now eligible for the $1,200 stimulus check
.
After Scholl v Mnuchin ruled that the US government couldn’t continue to deny funds which should have been available months ago, we have only 12 days to get this money into their trust accounts.
.
And the prisons as usual aren’t doing shit!
.
Call OR prisons and the ODOC and demand that they immediately announce the news, provide the forms, and help everyone file before the deadline.
.
Here is a script and a phone list for OR prisons and ODOC officials. Please call each number – this is urgent!
.
For more resources on how to help your incarcerated comrades, friends, and loved ones get this money, check abolitioniststudy.wordpress.com where you can access a pdf packet with all the necessary forms and instructions on how to fill them in and file them.
