Outbreaks are dialogues.
We support this call to action.

#CallToAction #DisabilityJustice #Solidarity #ISigned #PDX #PdxDisability #DisabilityVisibility #SaferEvents #KeepThePPE #KeepYourPeople #CPAPsAreInThisSeason Open letter to all people coordinating, facilitating, and hosting events in (and around) Portland, Oregon–

To Everyone:
Solidarity and action from the wider community, regardless of personal disability status, is required for substantive, lasting change to occur. Share if you care and read on if you're curious…

Introduction:
Organizers in Portland, Oregon would like to thank a fellow group of sick and/or disabled queers in Chicago for writing the original open letter from a place of love for our communities, rage at the disregard for caution and care, and hope for change and accountability. We appreciate the foundation you've offered and intend to boost and spread the message to more places.

Outbreaks are dialogues*

We are concerned for the safety of all of our community members, globally. We are disappointed to see that, in over 2+ years of living with Covid, event and party planners still plan and promote events that are unsafe and inaccessible. To us, this generally means parties and events without defined capacity limits, that do not allow for social distancing, and that do not have mask requirements.

We have already seen the repeated cycle of abandoning mask mandates and its correlation with the rise of cases. Furthermore, we know that vaccination status is not a guarantee of safety regarding spread. We understand members of our community have been significantly impacted. We see elders dying as cities are slow to bring back masks.

Continued Covid safety is urgent at this moment because we refuse to spend another year recklessly endangering, neglecting, and isolating the people society chooses to leave in the margins. We admit that we are still in the midst of this pandemic, a mass-disabling event, and that Covid is a dangerous virus, not just for disabled people.

Have you ever thought about suicide? Do you love someone who has? If you want to be sure you won’t be locked up against your will DON’T call a suicide hotline - instead, start learning about Alternatives to Suicide and other local resources that can help. I can’t promise you there’s enough good stuff coming to make the tough stuff worth slogging through, some days I’m still not sure myself. I am sure that you matter, and there are folx like me out here that understand, and are willing to listen. #worldsuicidepreventionday #youmatter #smashstigma #recoveroutloud #noshame #mentalhealthmatters

1. Have you ever thought about suicide? (most of us have) I have too
(black letters on a pale green field)

2. The first time I seriously considered taking my own life was in the summer of 2000, when I got very, very sick, and a bunch of overwhelming things happened in a few short months
I was 12 years sober
(black letters on a pale blue/green/yellow field)

3. Today I am 33 years sober (and counting) and a facilitator for Alternatives to Suicide groups, trained with @WildflowerAlliance since 2015
(black letters on a pale green/yellow/white field)

4. Thinking about suicide does not mean we are “sick”
It means we are overwhelmed, and don’t see a way out

Do not sleep on this #nationalparkservice #kingscanyonnationalpark is literally connected to #sequoianationalpark That means you can do a #daytrip ir stay o de #theweekend fir a truly glorious stay. Half the crowds vs #yosemitenationalpark means it is so much easier to find a place to stay INSIDE THE PARK. I recommend the west side of the park where there is that 🏕 ⛺️ right next to the most glorious meadow I hav ever encountered in my entire life. What is it? That’s up to you. Finders keepers. In solidarity with the movement to abolish campus police and the call for a nationwide day of refusal on May 3, we are on strike. We support getting cops off college campuses and will not cross the picket line.

We acknowledge that policing disproportionately violates Black, Brown, Indigenous, queer, transgender, and poor peoples and ultimately renders all members of campus and its surrounding communities unsafe. We are committed to a campus that advances racial justice by ending such forms of harm, and we call on Oregon State University (@oregonstate) and all college campuses to center care and transformative justice.

We urge OSU to align their resources, policies and practices with its stated commitment to anti-racism, beginning with the reallocation of any and all resources from our newly-established police force to increased budgets, wages and FTE for programs and departments that center care and support Black, Brown, Indigenous, queer, trans and low-income students.

@lanecountymutualaid Whose Really Fighting?
Letter of Solidarity to the Imprisoned Firefighter Fund OR Project, and Call to Action by
Freddie Abraham, former MCDC Food Striker.

It’s time someone really speaks out to draw attention to a problem here in Oregon & maybe quite possibly all around the country But for now, I’ll focus on the facts here in my backyard, my forest, my wildland.

For years those incarcerated in the Oregon penal system have been at the forefront of the fight against wildland fires. Whether its first response to put something small out before it gatts big or at the height of a raging forest fire trying to get a grip on it. All the way to “mop up”, where we check to make sure the fire is out.

This is very very labor intensive & sometimes your shift could be 14 hours long easy, sometimes more. I know because I was one of these fighters for 3 ½ years. I started out doing fire line like everyone else then I became a sawyer. I packed a chainsaw, axe, sharpening tools & a container of gas all day everyday during the fight.

For us the work is rewarding. We’ve saved land that’s been in people’s families for generations as well as public land used for pleasure. We get an opportunity to meet & build a camaraderie with a lot of good dedicated people who we became familiar with year after year in the firefighting community.

Tories are swapped about conditions of the fire that’s being worked on by inmate crews, & often were commended by chiefs and commanders for our work and tenacity. Based on our very exceptional tract record year after year. The question always comes up, “how much do toy guys make?”

That’s when we shout it out loud & proud, “six dollars a day!” The looks from the people in the free world are always the same, “eyes bugged out.” Their next words are always the same, “are you serious?!” They always apologize & thank us for our help & in the big camps where we eat out food for work etc. They are the nicest people ever.

Nevertheless it’s still a crime. It’s still another example of modern day slavery that is practiced here in America. All the while the Department of Corrections is making a couple hundred, give or take, a day off of each head they put on a fire. Out of the six dollars, three goes on our books and three is saved for when we get out.

Basically less than peanuts. After 3 ½ years of firefighting I was barely able to accumulate enough $3.00 deposits to but a decent outfit upon my release. Not to mention they often fuck up the paperwork and they mss days where you should have been paid, which is then on us to file grievances complain to the higher ups & then we may get our owed money.

Something needs to be done! Someone needs to help us fight for a change to get those who fight the compensation they deserve. We’ve tried so hard from the inside with our strives being interrupted, put on hold and blocked by the powers that be.

If you support us, if you agree that something needs to change, speak out! Use all avenues to help. Whether it’s social media or to your local politicians, get the word out! We thank you and we need you.

Freddie A.
