The long goodbye came to an end today when I pulled the door shut on 23 Winsted Drive one last time.

We all knew this was never going to be our forever home, but snug inside that would-be starter, 22 years just flew by. Packing up and clearing out has been both a blur and a blessing.

I boxed the speaker up earlier than I intended (did I really think I could survive without my favorite Fleetwood Mac radio?!?) Instead, the music in my ears these past few days was voices and noises from the past. Giggles from Tesla’s bedroom, video game chatter between the boys, Molly scampering up and down the stairs. Mamma Mia and Harry Potter. Queen and Duran Duran. College Game Day and Yankee games.

The oven timer, the dryer buzzer, the scrape of the basket coming out of the closet for uniforms and gear. Champagne corks, carpet karaoke, too many hellos and hollers to count.

I smiled when I recalled what feels like a million (mostly) delicious dinners overflowing with food and friendly banter. I wept a bit when I remembered the rough nights and the tough calls. The realities of even a very beautiful life.

A home bears witness to the best and the worst of us - it centers us and grounds us. Comforts us and challenges us. It’s the foundation we build a foundation on.

My baseball bestie Kerri reminded me of a quote from Andy Bernard from The Office… “I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days before you’ve actually left them”.

I’m grateful that the good days always outnumbered the bad ones. And that we were blessed with the most wonderful friends and neighbors for celebrations and emergencies alike.

Most of all, I’m grateful that although the five of us each walked away on different days, we have never been more together. 🏡 by @careyloch

27 years hitched to this fella!

Back then Tes was perched on a pile of phone books for our move across the country - all three of us wide eyed, excited and naive about everything yet to come.

And now, a shorter drive with a different auburn-haired companion to keep us company in a big ole U-Haul.

Some things haven’t changed - I still fall fast asleep in moving vehicles, he’s still an excellent driver, and new adventures aren’t all that scary as long as we’re together.
