Dinner! What did you have? I forgot about this lil restaurant up the street I’d get the best garlic naan during the Covid shut down. Got me a double order to go with the Baigan Choka and Curry Chicken leftovers in the fridge.

Boxed! Caribbean Lyme 1747 Albion Rd, Etobicoke, ON ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (3.5/5 Stars). Refreshingly, the staff interaction here was superb. A friendly smile, engaging conversation, and impressive knowledge about the food on the menu set a wonderful tone. We started with Pali’s must-have spring roll, which he gave a solid 10—it was hot, crisp, and perfectly filled with cabbage and other vegetables.

The pepper shrimp came next. As the dish hit the table, a gentle wave of heat carried the aroma toward us, hitting the senses like a rich, peppery perfume. While Google reviews claim they are the best in town, that wasn’t my experience, having tried this dish at many other restaurants. On the plus side, the size of the shrimp was unmatched, and they were skillfully cooked without becoming rubbery. However, the shrimp itself (minus the batter) needed salt and a spiced marinade prior to frying. A few were over-battered, and more onion, actual hot peppers, and a finish of cracked black pepper would have helped the blandness.

Our final dish was the chicken fried rice topped with a soy-based crispy fried chicken quarter. The chicken was easily the main character—crisp and flavourful, though close to being too dry, with excellently rendered skin. While the portion of rice was plentiful and easily shareable, it wasn’t particularly noteworthy, carrying a strong undertone of Chinese 5-spice and very sparse vegetables and chicken pieces. The house pepper sauce had a decent kick, but it was too tart and needed salt; beyond the vinegar base and heat, it lacked exceptional depth of flavour.

With a constant flow of patrons, it is clear they are highly popular with the locals. As a side note, Pali mentioned, “Dad, this bathroom is sparkly,” and I agree—it is by far the cleanest bathroom we have ever used at a Caribbean restaurant.

Overall, the food is okay rather than exceptional, but the service is truly unmatched. I would definitely return, especially for their weekday lunch specials, which I believe are the most economical in the GTA. taken in Caribbean Lyme by @caribbeanpot
