A historic evening on Wednesday 18 June! Celebrating the graduates of the FIRST Wapichan course at the University of Guyana. Courses in all of Guyana's nine Amerindian languages, and in Creolese, to come. The Dalit Panthers, family rejection, and having two cultures with "iconic flavours"... Lots to take away from this back copy of Burnt Roti from December 2020, published in the aftermath of George Floyd's murder and amid the Black Lives Matter protests.

This week, I've also had a number of people send me an article from The Voice newspaper by Celeste Mohammed on growing up "Dougla" in Trinidad, 'Too Black to be Indian. Too Indian to be Black'. While I'd push back against the idea of what she calls a "mixed-race curse", I recognise so much of what she shares, from my own and others' experiences, especially that exhausting hypervigilence of 'always reading rooms to figure out which half of me was welcome.'

I'm glad that stories of other mixes that do not involve whiteness are coming into the mainstream in the UK and adding new layers, perspectives and colours to the conversation, without shying away from persisting anti-Blackness. We need to keep sharing our stories, and unpacking the political in the personal โค๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ by @carinya.sharples

So proud of my talented sister friend @eliciajmckenzie for her exhibition Art In Racing at Department Store in Brixton, sharing the amazing focus, drive and talent of two rising stars in motor racing, Reuben Stanislaus and Lewis Appiagyei. They remind me of my no.1 champion of the track (and 13-year-old nephew) @daniel__karting... the next generation! But racing is an expensive sport and they need our support to reach the top. It was an honour to be commissioned to research and write the Guyana chapter of the latest Lonely Planet South America guidebook. Despite the long hours and stress to get everything right and fit the tight constraints and word counts, it is exciting to share just some of Guyana's treasures. Massive thanks to everyone who helped along the way and put up with my endless questions and requests for info โค๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡พ by @carinya.sharples

Fascinating and unsettling (free) exhibition of Donald Locke's paintings, sculptures, photographs and even poetry at the @ikongallery in Birmingham. With plenty of Guyanese references to spot for the eagle-eyed visitor. Worth a visit if you're in town, it's due to travel to Camden in London next ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ by @carinya.sharples

Flashback to a few carnival moments... starting with the fitting words of Guyanese poet Grace Nicholls (displayed here by the Paraiฬso samba bateria): "I have crossed an ocean, I have just my tongue / From the root of the old one, a new one has sprung".

Notting Hill Carnival is not carnival in Trinidad, Grenada, Barbados or Brazil. It was planted on London soil. It may not be what it once was, or what it was intended to be, but it is a vital and powerful community space. Nothing compares to parading or walking tall along streets where usually you feel small.

No amount of bad press, negative vibes and lack of support will stop that. Long live Notting Hill Carnival on the streets of London! ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ–คโค๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’š by @carinya.sharples
