On hard days, I look back on this post-it that I wrote I think at a creative writing workshop led by @carinya.sharples at the #deptfordlitfest @deptfordlounge some years ago, and remind myself that I promised to try to “keep going, keep growing, creating, collaborating, connecting…” and despite the ups and downs of the writer’s life, the words still encourage me today. #writerslife #amwriting #londonstories #inspiration #writingcommunity #keepgoing #growing #collaboration #creativewriting #brenebrownquotes

I can’t thank Carinya Sharples enough for facilitating the conversation at deptford literary festival. Carinya’s writing exercises and speed dating style conversation starters got us all talking and bonding as a group. It was brilliant, we did two hours, and I could have easily stayed for a third hour!

I went into that room alone, and came out part of a new WhatsApp group full of 10 local writers and we’ve already arranged our first write together meet up. Repeat catchy slogan after me… YOUR NETWORK IS YOUR NET-WORTH!! 😂😂 #bookstagram #writersofinstagram #writingcommunity

Fun facts:
Did you know this will be our 11th time taking part of Notting Hill?

2008- 2009- 2010- 2011 collaborating with @triboband
2012 - collaborating with @maracatudomafua
2013 and 2014 - Solo Parade @cocoyealondon on official route
2015? (A blur!)
2016, 2017 and 2018 - taking it to da streets guerrila style

This means we have earned the right to show our sounds and movements thanks to the groups that have welcomed us, our many members that supported us throughout the years and amazing highlights such as having @marivaldopaim , a dream come true as he is one of the driving forces of @blocoileaiye .

Throughout the years, a blend of cities, organisations and artists have made our small yet solid group to grow and although we have got our carnival confirmation too late in order to apply for funding, we are confident with the people we have gathered in combined energy!

One element from start to this point, is our utter admiration and respect for the living flame that is our musical director @mac_dende

Many of the elements have been hand made with love, carrying out the family and community bond in all our educational and creative processes!

Wishing all the groups parading this weekend a great and peaceful journey!

Ase!

ARTIST REVEAL!

Joining Carmina Masoliver and Laila Sumpton as part of SHEreos of Lewisham: Carinya Sharples, Autumn Sharkey and Nicole Fersko.

Lewisham based poet Carinya Sharples was commissioned to write a poem celebrating one of our local SHEroes. She also leads the #TheFoodOnOurTable- a project which explores our stories around food and the independent cafes and restaurants of the borough.

Nicole Fersko and Autumn Sharkey are writers both currently studying on the Goldsmiths University of London MA in Creative Writing and Education, they co-facilitated the SHEroes of Lewisham workshops alongside Laila at two local primary schools.

Laila Sumpton is a poet, performer and educator who leads the #SHEroesofLewisham project. She has designed SHEroes workshops for adults and children and is also working on the Park Life poetry project which will showcase at Deptford Literature Festival.

Hi, we're Middleground!

We've had loads of new followers recently, and even more since we first introduced ourselves over two years ago, so we thought it was time to another introduction!

We've compiled a summary of who we are, what we do and why, but Middleground is so much more than just a magazine. We're extremely grateful to each member of the mixed-race community who's engaged with this project so far -- whether they're contributors, followers, influencers or anyone else who's stopped by to speak to us -- because they make it richer and worth all the work we do.

📩 Our DMs are always open for chats and conversations, so if you have any more questions you can't find answers to, or even just ideas you'd like to share, please do reach out 💖

👋🏼 So to summarise: welcome to all our new followers, hello to those we hadn't introduced ourselves to until now and hi again to those who are familiar with us. Thank you for joining our journey, we're glad you're here and can't wait to share what's coming with you! x

Calling all foodie creatives in South East London! 🌶🍲🥗🍑🌮

We’re super excited to be hosting the wonderful writer and facilitator Caryina Sharples (@carinya.sharples ) for a creative writing workshop at our Downham community garden this Saturday 5th March, 11:30am-1:30pm.

Attendees will explore the topic of food as a way people and communities can express and connect to culture, memory and place.

We will provide writing materials and the opportunity for members to publish their work online. We are aiming for the workshop to be inspiring, fun, and thought-provoking – and it doesn't require any previous writing experience, or advanced level English.

For more info and sign up form please see link in bio ✨✨✨

The event is supported by Lewisham Borough of Culture 💚
