Built between 2008 and 2011 by volunteers from operazione Mato Grosso, @rifugio_frassati sits beside the small lac des Merdeux, where the Alta Via 1 meets the Tour du Grand Saint Bernard.

From here, the landscape opens towards Col Malatrà (trà trà😌) and the higher routes beyond. Inside it feels very Italian, pasta, mountain cheese, hot tea, and the kind of welcome that makes you feel home taken in Rifugio Frassati by @carla.playa

Two passes, one night between them. Col des Ceingles (2,809 m) divides Comba de Thoules from Comba de Merdeux, steep and loose underfoot, working pasture below. Rifugio Frassati (2.540 m) sits at the head of the valley, built by hand by volunteers, no road in. Beyond it, Col de Malatrà (2.934 m) the name means “bad passage” in old Latin, and the final stretch earns it, loose and lunar underfoot. At the top Mont Blanc and Les Grandes Jorasses open up without warning.

THE FULL LOOP: DAY 4

Distance: 37.50 km
Climbing: 1,829 m
Moving time: 6h 06min

Another 6am start, but this time sunny. After a full day of rain, it felt glorious.

Just two climbs separated us from Chamonix. We saw the sun rising on the first one. Down to Trient for a second breakfast on the steps of the pink church, then up to Col de la Balme to finally see Chamonix and Mont Blanc waiting for us.

After a long descent to the valley, we made it. We arrived back at the church where we had started just a few days before.

We did the full loop. 160 km in four days. We did it together, at our own pace, and enjoyed every second of it. An adventure that will definitely stay with us forever.

Now, a good rest to enjoy the craziness of UTMB week. See you around Chamonix!

THE FULL LOOP: DAY 2

Distance: 38.47 km
Elevation: 2,078 m
Moving time: 6h 14min

Alarm set for 6am, but we got woken up by thunderstorms earlier. A quick coffee and we started moving.

First climb up to Col de la Seigne to enter Italy, which welcomed us with plenty of rain. Luckily, it didn’t last long, and we made our way down to Courmayeur after another climb, where we had what felt like the best focaccia in the world.

Then just another 7km climb to our campsite for the night. We cooked pasta and were in bed early again, this time with the rain coming down outside.

The weather didn’t treat us very well today, but we’re over halfway!

Nick found his T-shirt. But has anyone seen his shorts?

THE FULL LOOP: DAY 1

After a 6am start from Chamonix and a beautiful sunrise over Mont Blanc, the first climb started in Les Houches setting the rhythm for the day.

A big resupply in Les Contamines: bread, bananas and candy to keep us going. Then a beautiful valley trail through to Notre Dame de la Gorge, where hundreds of people will come together next week to cheer the UTMB runners, with fires burning and voices echoing through the valley.

Then came the big climb of the day: 1,400m up to Col du Bonhomme, before going down to Les Chapieux for a pizza and our first night sleeping outside.

Nick lost his T-shirt. Did anyone see it?

THE FULL LOOP

A week before UTMB, we’ll take on the full loop around Mont Blanc in four days: 160km and 10,000m of climbing, sleeping outside and taking time to enjoy the views.

We carried enough water and food to spend the night in this small, cool bivacco, quietly set in the Italian Alps ⛰️

We had an afternoon storm, but managed to make the ascent in between the rain. It was a full house in the end, with a few of us sleeping in the shelter.

The morning after was clear and sunny, so we left early to beat the sun on the climb. It made the ascent so much more enjoyable and the cherry on the cake was reaching Col de Vertosan with a view of Mont Blanc.

This Bivacco sits at around 2.550m in the quiet Vallone di Vertosan, near the Laghi di Dziule. It was inaugurated in 2021 in memory of Claudio Brédy, a local politician, mountaineer and former mayor of Gignod who died in the mountains in 2017. His family owned the land and funded the structure, which was designed as a low-impact, removable shelter. They wanted to create something that would keep his connection to the mountains alive, in a place he knew and loved. taken in Aosta Valley by @carla.playa

Feliç volta al sol to my biggest supporter🎂 my home, my peace and my strength all at once. Always being there and making even the smallest moments my favorite ones.
