This production comes with not one, but TWO associate directors, and our first (alphabetically) is Carla Te Paa!

"I came onto the project late, but I was excited to work with Jay because I had seen him direct before and I wanted to understand more about the process from the directors lens. I was drawn to the mystery of the writing. It has this 'waiting for godot' style to it where you're not fully sure what is happening until it all comes together further into the script! I love the glimpses of storyline you get in memories and short bursts."

Carla Te Paa is an Aotearoa-born actor and emerging creative who graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in 2022 with a Diploma of Musical Theatre. Since graduating, she has continued to expand her practice across theatre, screen, and creative development through workshops and productions including Under Milk Wood (ATYP), the 24-hour performance project Scene Dating (Old Fitz Theatre), and the short film Rhythm of Resilience (Splice Productions).
Prior to moving across the ditch to study, Carla performed as Elphaba Alternate and Ensemble Swing in a COVID-19-cancelled season of Wicked (North Shore Music Theatre), and as Betty Rizzo in Grease (Harlequin Musical Theatre). In 2021, Carla was awarded the NAPTA iTICKET Scholarship in recognition of her emerging talent and to support the next stage of her career.
Day of the Triffids marks Carla’s debut as an Associate Director, and she is thrilled to be collaborating with J. James-Moody and the team at New Theatre on this production.

Her favourite line?

"This could be our last night EVER in London. If it is, I want to remember it as the night I danced."

Amsterdam is officially one of the coolest places I’ve ever been ✨

Clogs, dykes and canals - The art, history and culture are fascinating. It’s also where my parents met, so I got shown around like a local and heard all the best stories 🫶🏼

The Anne Frank House and Van Gogh Museum by day, then watching the city turn red at night.

We caught a show at @boomchicago , visited a cheese factory and windmill farm, made our own chocolate at Tony’s Chocolonely, and visited the Prostitute Museum and the Torture Museum too.

We happened to be there for SAIL, the first one since 2015. It only happens every five years (but covid in 2020), so that felt pretty special ⛴️🛥️⛵️ taken in Amsterdam, Netherlands by @carlatepaa
