I’m launching my marketing business. Again! Wait, wha?

Yep. I started a marketing agency a couple of years ago and a mate wanted to join and it sounded great. A while into it we had different ideas on how it should all work, so we called it quits.

Then our little fam did a cheeky interstate stint where lots of dadding happened.

Now we’re back in Melbourne and I’m giving it another crack, myself!

The business is called Moka Media (@mokamediaau). I called it that basically because I drink lots of coffee from a stove-top Moka pot ☕️ and I think the name has a ring to it ☎️ .

I help service-based businesses build their online presence to get found by their ideal customers. This is often through things like local Google search, Google Ads and Facebook/Instagram Ads.

If you know anyone may need help to get the word out there about their business, I’d be happy to see if I can help them 🙂🙏.

Thanks for your support!

Today marks 5 years since I’ve been off the beers (and any other booze).

I feel fresher, (a bit) fitter, healthier and enjoy early mornings now. I have found a rhythm with my no booze life and am happy to be on the other side. I’m grateful to have stopped drinking while I still have 3 brain cells left 😅 cos I’ve been able to make some decisions and pursue a direction that actually brings me fulfilment. What started out of necessity cos it made me crook, I’ve come to love the lifestyle without it.

It hasn’t been all rainbows though 🌈 - the last few years have been some of the most challenging for me mentally. There’s been a real period of loneliness sprinkled throughout the years as I find things to replace boozing and related activities.

It’s a bit deep but I think one of the biggest things that’s helped has been to shed a layer of skin and step into a bit of a new identity. I used to be the guy who did all sorts of stupid shit when I was drinking just for laughs. Finding other things that I enjoy and get positive reinforcement from has been tough but worth it.

Stopping drinking doesn’t fix everything. Though I do think it makes any challenges that I do have 10x easier to deal with.

Will I go back to drinking again? Na. I think I’m done. Maybe I’ll have a change of heart when the kids are grown up and we’ve got nothing else to do haha. But for now life would be so much more difficult if I threw evening or weekend beers into the mix.

So as I cheers ya with my ginger beer and lime - I don’t ever judge anyone else for their booze related choices, my life has just become better without it. by @carlinroche

Today is gonna be a cracker!

In a recent podcast, @aliabdaal said that he writes at the top of his daily journal ‘today’s going to be a great day!’ He seems to have some pretty great days, maybe I’ll try it too?

For 25 days straight I’ve been doing it - takes 5 seconds, so it’s easy to keep doing. I like it. I’m not sure it’s making a difference but to see that and remind myself each day that the possibility is there, previously I wouldn’t even have thought about it.

Rather, I’d just let the day happen and it was either good or not. I suppose it is an announcement to yourself to help get in the right frame of mind.

It’s a small step to command some control over how I feel or react to things throughout the day. Rather than my previous ‘na had a shit one cos ‘whatever it was’ happened’, victim approach.

@bjfogg coined the term ‘The Maui Habit’ and his version is to say ‘today’s gonna be a great day’ (or whatever means more to you but along the same lines) as soon as your feet hit the floor out of bed in the morning.

It’s a tiny change but for me it’s a great reminder that each day is a clean slate and I think you’re more likely to have a great day if you say you will. And even if you did have a shit one yesterday.

My great day today started early. I was on the road by 5.00am for a meeting across town. Stoked I did cos I got to see an epic storm over the city on the way in. Thanks for these incredible pics @jcp_photography1 😍⚡️👆🙏 taken in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia by @carlinroche

I’ve recently realised that I need a lot of help.

It’s still January and by now lots of people have picked their ‘word of the year’ to live by or focus on. While I like the concept, I have like 17 words.

One word though that has been jumping out at me is ‘help’. For as long as I can remember I’ve always tried to figure things out myself.

I think there’s inherently some value in getting resourceful sometimes and being aware of when you’re being ripped off, for example.

I’ve realised though when it comes to building my business (and other areas of my life) this DIY approach has been severely limiting.

I’ve been surrounded by people that prefer taking that DIY approach, which is fine, though when it comes to wanting to make progress with something, getting help is most often the answer. Simply just admitting that just asking someone for help is a tough step for someone that doesn’t usually do that.

Without costing an arm and leg, particularly when getting started, I’ve realised you can almost always get help in every area of the journey. The power of just a different perspective is invaluable.

Initially, I didn’t realise it was my ego that was getting in the way - and I think more often men societally have this predisposed stance of “it’ll be alright” &”I’ll figure it out”. And/or it’s a sign of weakness that you need help.
People like @coreyboutwell have been championing this and helping me to realise it’s perfectly ok to ask for help and in fact, everyone gets to benefit when you do. I’ve seen him lay down challenges for people to ask for help at least once per day.
So some areas for me that I’ve been DIYing it for ages that I’d finally started getting help for are:
Building websites
My mental health
Each area of building my business
Content creation
Parenting
Making new friends/connections in the area we just moved to
So in 2024, one of the many things I’ll work on is dropping the ego and getting as much help as possible. It’s a massive load of the shoulders and more fun knowing I get to work with a bunch of other people from now on.
I’ll finish with this: If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. African proverb. by @carlinroche

Since gave up booze 5 years ago, coffee has become my vice - below are a few things that I’ve found over my coffee journey:

☕️ Firstly, I’ve tried going cold turkey and not drinking it at all for a month. That’s boring.

☕️ I limit myself to one shot of coffee, max 2 sometimes. Any more and I’m on a Citylink toll road to migraines and anxiety

☕️ I don’t usually drink it within 60 minutes of waking up - but to wake up with sunlight movement etc.(really stoked I found this one, I was cooking myself for ages having a double espresso as soon as I woke up)

☕️ I usually exercise after it at some stage. There is some good research around the effectiveness of workout after caffeine. I just find it easier to get started with exercise after a cup of Joe.

☕️ I haven’t measured how much water intake I need - though I have to drink around 2 litres a day if I’ve had coffee. (too much coffee and not enough water for me = migraines)

☕️ I usually only drink black coffee

☕️ I do get withdrawals if I don’t have it, though not having it at all isn’t as fun

☕️ If I’m still feeling tired after coffee, instead of doing what used to and drink more coffee - I realise now it’s one or a combo of:
- Not enough water
- Not enough exercise
- Not enough sleep
- Too much coffee in previous days

☕️ When I get this fine juggling act of the above points right - it leads to a nice sustained ‘lift’ of energy throughout the day.

I hate going to gyms.

Gyms have no vibe (at least the ones I’ve been to).

You have to drive to get there and they’re full of gym cats with their headphones on and a look on their faces looking like they’re listening to a eulogy.

I just prefer doing home workouts and not feeling sad.

I’m always looking for efficient home workouts and I think I’ve found the ultimate one (for me anyway): Kettlebells.

I bought a set of 2 from Marketplace a couple of weeks ago and I’ve used them nearly everyday.

I’ve recently seen a few ‘kettlebell coaches’ (especially @themartinmethod) on instagram and realised the huge variatiations in training that’s possible with only 1 or 2 kettlebells.

Being a minimalist at heart, items that serve multiple functions are always appealing to me.

There are hundreds of variations of exercises that you can do with these things. When I’m looking for a new type of KB exercise, I just take to Instagram to see what these KB coaches are doing and try one.

I like how easy it is to step outside and just pick one up, the quick improvement that I’ve seen in techniques and the type of sustained energy I feel after doing a little sesh.

Obviously I’m a massive KB amateur, though they’re a big ✅ from me in these early stages, I’ll keep you posted. by @carlinroche

I will exercise in front of or with my kids whenever I can.

I believe there are so many benefits of doing this:

🏋️‍♂️Kids thrive on routine - so if I’m exercising at a similar time during the day, it actually helps with maintaining a routine for them and in turn helps me stick to a routine.

🏋️‍♂️ Little man often joins in, creating a fun thing we can do together.

🏋️‍♂️ As well as the routine thing, if I don’t feel like showing up to exercise, I know that’s one less session he’ll see me not show up for or slacking on. Not that he cares but I care about setting a good example of sticking to something
🏋️‍♂️ It helps to instill in them the healthy habit of regualr exercise from a young age.

🏋️‍♂️ It can be a great way to mix up a day - if things are a bit challenging otherwise, there’s not much that throwing on some music and jumping around doesnt fix.

🏋️‍♂️ I have more energy to play more later or just to show up as I need to, rather than being ol cbf dad. by @carlinroche

One of the toughest things I’m finding as a parent, husband and business owner, is how to manage my energy throughout the day.

There is always plenty to do as a baseline around the home, let alone with the business, so I’ve struggled with feeling like I’m not on top of everything.

It’s always a work in progress though below are some things I’ve tried what I’ve found helps 👇

Things I’ve tried that haven’t worked:
👎Telling myself ‘it’s just a phase, I’ll dose up on caffeine for a few weeks to get through”
👎 Stay up late when the kid is in bed to get work done
👎 Eating sugary foods to get a lift in the afternoon when I inevitably have a ‘slump’
👎 Ignoring signs of fatigue

What has been helping lately:
👍 Walking before anything else in the morning (also walking in nature when possible)
👍 Following Andrew Huberman’s - no caffeine for the first 60-90 minutes of the morning and getting NSDR (Non-sleep Deep Rest) I sometimes do a guided meditation in the afternoons when I have my normal slump
👍 No Netflix evenings during the so I’m not tempted to stay up later - usually bed by 10 or before
👍 Being kind to myself if I haven’t been able to get through my to-do list during the day by @carlinroche

For a few months now, more often than not, I’ve been waking up and basically walking for 20-30 minutes, straight away. 🚶‍♂️

The walk first thing was inspired by @thedankoe, though a lot of walking has been on my radar for a while. YouTuber @wanheekimm was the first to help me realise how helpful walking was to support overall health and fitness goals.

The benefits are so multilayered, it’s become a no-brainer for me to implement it as a keystone habit. The benefits include: helping to wake up in the morning🥱, helps to fill-in time in the first 60 minutes to not be tempted to drink coffee straight way(h/t @hubermanlab), getting some great cardio exercise out of the way early, helps me to think clearer, I get lots of ideas when I walk, each day starts with this big win and often I get the added benefits of early sunlight in my eyes to further help me wake up.

Finally, to stick with the theme of daily energy, of one of the biggest benefits I’ve noticed is more energy to kick the day off and more stable energy throughout the day.

It’s not been hard to keep up with as I enjoy walking and starting the day like this. by @carlinroche

Today is day 9 of ‘trying’ to write 1000 words a day, for 1 year.

I was inspired to do this by a recent podcast with @aliabdaal interviewing @nathanbarry of @convertkit and how Nathan wrote 1000 words per day for 600 odd days in a row, and that his personal brand career was built mainly on this habit.

For ages I’ve wanted something consistent to do that creates momentum but I’ve always been held back by things like: Which platform do I write on? What is the best way to ‘write something if it’s for Instagram? Blah blah whatever other excuses - though this is very simple (not easy) and basically what I would do anyway (I literally have hundreds of dead-end Google docs that I once started to write ideas or whatever was on my mind).

I think the most liberating thing was that you can write whatever. So it may be some more personal mind musings, an ebook, some copy for client work, or posts just like you’re reading 👆. While I’m consistently falling short of the 1000 words for now and it’s messy af in terms of structure and what I write - I’m seeing it as a win that I’ve showed up to start writing somewhere every day 💪. by @carlinroche
