Will never not love designing for dance. First world premiere of the season, Allegra by Benjamin Akio Kimitch at New York Live Arts / a cosmogonic piece that feels, to me, to be about (among other, more concrete things) the persistence of dance, performance and joy through even the cruelest of times—here reflecting on a dance form which has survived 1400 years and preserves within it even older forms of diverse origin. The first half of ‘26/‘27 is packed with dance, much of it in New York, which has become an increasing rarity for me, so it’s exciting to collaborate on @benjaminakio new evening-length work 𝘼𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙜𝙧𝙖 premiering at @nylivearts with performances running October 8-10 Director & Choreographer: 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗸𝗶𝗼 𝗞𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵 Performers: 𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗸, 𝗟𝗮𝗶 𝗬𝗶 𝗢𝗵𝗹𝘀𝗲𝗻, 𝗚𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿-𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗮𝘁𝗮, 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗶 𝗬𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗼 Costume Designer: 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗼𝘀 𝗝 𝗦𝗼𝘁𝗼

This coming season brings waves of excitement for me. I’m at a point in my life and career where I’m perpetually debuting, but ‘26/‘27 brings a string of dream debuts and dream collaborations—starting at @operadeparis with Perle Noire: Meditations for Joséphine with the incandescent @_juliabullock , Claudia Rankine, @dr.tyshawnsorey_official and Peter Sellars, an artist I’ve admired since childhood. The glimmers of this project started for me many years ago under the vision of @winokurz at the @metmuseum and through many fits and starts saw its world premiere at @nationaleoperaballet and finally arrives in Paris to celebrate the life and legacy of Joséphine Baker, from Sept 9-19. It will be reprised at @barbicancentre on October 20 / photos by the incomparable @ruthwalzphotography by @carlooto
Just ahead of Paris and @operadeparis, thank you @parterrebox for the space to share a bit more about “PERLE NOIRE: Meditations for Joséphine” 😌 This project, developed with my beloved collaborators, is based on years of reflection, research and a rooted respect for Joséphine Baker ♥️ by @carlooto
