It was such a joy to be part of the Music Therapy conference at Auckland University. A chance to meet with dear friends and colleagues, to learn and expand, to make new connections and be inspired by the amazing work other music therapists are doing out there.

I also had the opportunity to present about my developing work within two Medsafe-authorised psychedelic-assisted therapy projects here in Aotearoa. I'll share more about this on another post, but for now here's some photos of the conference! by @carlos.riegel

16 May 2026 marked a very special day. The Soul a Psybin project held the first (legal) ceremonial psilocybin session within the palliative care setting in Aotearoa.🍄

It is such an honour to be deepening my relationship with, growing my understanding of, and learning from this ancient medicine.

The healing that occurs at a whakapapa and cellular level, not only for those sitting with the rongoā but for us holding the space too, is and always will be profound.

It was an honour to be within ceremony with you again Dr Fi Darracott-Cankovic, this time holding together rather than being held.

Ngā mihi to my love, @carlos.riegel for your deep resonance with music, for creating the essential sound scape, and for your teachings and encouragement to play with sound and vibration myself. All was essential in holding and moving through the medicine session. Bring on the opportunities for music to be in person, to be receptive and responsive in the moment to allow the deeper vibratory dance between oro and rongoā.

Big love to Dove Hospice for all your support and for all that you have done, are doing and are yet to do for so many.

Tū Wairua is a Hauora Māori initiative designed, led, and directed by Māori (Rangiwaho, Ngāi Tāmanuhiri), investigating the safety and effectiveness of administering rongoā Māori psilocybe taonga species to whānau suffering from problematic methamphetamine use (PMU).

Health psychologist Anna-Leigh Hodge (Te Rarawa, Ngātiwai) and resident community member at @mangaroafarms is a wahine Māori working at the interface of mātauranga Māori, rongoā Māori, clinical psychology, and emerging psychedelic research with Tū Wairua all within a tikanga and wairua-grounded framework - recently interviewed by @debate_mag.

"What drew me to psilocybin within a rongoā Māori framework was not an interest in the substance alone, but in the wider healing potential that can emerge when this work is held in a way that is accountable to whakapapa, tikanga, wairua, whenua, and whānau. Rongoā Māori is not simply about plant medicine in isolation; it is about restoring balance and strengthening mauri through relationship."

I recently had the privilege of attending and presenting at the Australian Music Therapy Association conference in Melbourne, and I must say, it was profoundly inspiring. Over 400 music Therapist gathered to celebrate 50 years of Music Therapy in Australia, five decades of hard work and dedication to building a profession that has and continues to support countless people’s lives. These people are my kind of heroes! Passionate, hard-working, quirky, kind, skilled, empathetic, and above all, deeply musical human beings. It reminded me how fortunate I am to be part of a community of people who genuinely cares for others, and expresses that care through music. I had the opportunity to present (evidence-based) on a topic I am passionate about, music therapy in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy(PAT). It’s a conversation that is both timely and evolving, recognising that music therapists have been involved in psychedelic research since the 1960s and 70s, and continue to in current times. Recent approval by Medsafe (2025) and the TG(2023), have opened pathways for practising psychedelic assisted Therapy outside of research settings, presenting opportunities for music therapist involvement in PAT multidisciplinary teams. (I have very exciting news on this, which I will share soon). But It’s nothing new, the use of music has always been central to psychedelic healing, yet contemporary approaches rely on recorded music and generic music playlist, limiting the transformative potential of the music. In my most biased option, I believe that a more humanistic, adaptable, person-centred, and culturally-sensitive approach to using music would greatly contribute to the overall experience, and music therapists are trained and skilled with those qualities ;) Any way, I left the conference buzzing and inspired, feeling so grateful and hopeful about the future of Music Therapy. 42 laps around the sun…

Feels like I’ve lived many lives in this lifetime, having walked on many paths that have led me to where I am right now.

Taking time to reflect and acknowledge those who’ve contributed to who I am; my papa and mama, my siblings, my extended family, my friends, my teachers, my dear people, and all those who’ve come before us.

But also, I’m made of places, trees and plants, animals and insects, encounters with strangers, I’m made of challenges and struggles, all the lived experiences make me who I am today.

As I turn the page of this book of life and begin to write chapter Number 43, I can only start by giving gratitude to all of the people, living beings, places and experiences that have contributed to my life.

And lastly, I give thanks to my body, my mind, my heart and spirit for carrying me all along this windy road.

Here’s to you and I and the earth, to all the gifts of life that I’m made of.
