Kia ora friends and family,
Some of you might remember back in 2022 when members of the New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union (NZPFU) made up of firefighters, comms center staff, volunteer support officers, trainers, and the community risk team took industrial action. It started with small steps like not wearing uniforms and posting on social media, and eventually led to us walking off the job twice before we were finally taken seriously. Government intervention was needed, and commitments were made to address the serious concerns we raised.
Unfortunately, less than three years later, we’re back in the same position. Our contract expired in June last year and talks with FENZ have collapsed. Urgent issues like staffing shortages (one career recruit course next year has already been cancelled), an aging fleet, safety and welfare concerns are being ignored alongside a very low pay offer with no back pay.
This isn’t about being greedy, it’s about real, serious concerns that aren’t being addressed. Over the coming months, I’ll be sharing more about what my colleagues and I are facing every day on the frontline. It’s frustrating to be here again so soon but when our voices are ignored, we’re left with few options.

It’s not been the best at the job. It’s always about growing and learning from all the good people around you every time you’re there. 💪🏽🤙🏼 taken in Palmerston North Fire Brigade by @carlos_mcilwee
