Even the greatest warriors needed a moment away from battle.In the second installment of our Odyssey-inspired series, curator Ruth Allen examines a fragment of a black-figure hydria depicting Achilles and Ajax pausing during the Trojan War to play a game. Yesterday, we welcomed students from the Emory Pre-College course Archaeological Investigation: Pompeii and Herculaneum to the Carlos Museum!⁠⁠Led by instructors Tyler Holman and Tori Burke, students explored how archaeologists and historians use objects to better understand daily life in the ancient Roman world. Using the Carlos Museum's collections and online catalog, they completed a scavenger hunt, examined Roman artworks and artifacts, and discussed how these objects connect to the people and places of Pompeii and Herculaneum. ⁠⁠Students also shared fascinating presentations and observations about their chosen objects in the galleries. ⁠⁠Thank you to the Emory Pre-College Program for visiting. While traveling through Babylon, Ur, Cairo, and Luxor as part of the American Scientific Mission in 1919–1920, Emory professor William Arthur Shelton regularly wrote letters home to his wife and children.Today, these letters are preserved in the Stuart A.
