🏡I feel very grateful for the time and space at my residency at Oud Terra Nova, to be working on a Guidebook for drawing and writing about trees. In my latest book, “I don’t know how to draw a tree” (@rotopol , 2025), I take the readers on an artistic walk through the forest. I asked myself: When did we learn to depict trees in a certain way? And what does this say about our relationship with the world? The book filled with poems, watercolors and line drawings thoughtfully challenges established forms of pedagogies. 🌿✨

Carmen José (1991) is a Spanish illustrator, writer, educator and organizer. She holds a Master Fine Arts at the KH Kassel (Germany) in Visual Communication with focus on Illustration and Editorial Design. She is the author of two illustrated poetry books and ten illustrated books written by diverse authors in the fields of poetry, art education and social practices. As an educator she has taught in the bachelor of illustration and social practices for five years at WdKA and currently at the master program of RAVB. She is one of the founder and organizers of the Rotterdam Illustration Festival.

🏡 @dianevdmarel took this beautiful portrait of me last week at the nurturing and inspiring residency @oud.terranova feeling very grateful and looking forward to the next visit! 🌿✨ here the text for Oud Terra Nova: by @carmenjose_work

‘I Don’t Know How to Draw a Tree’, Rotopol (2025) is nu te zien in de tentoonstelling ‘Omslag’ bij Rijksmuseum Meermanno.

In the book ‘I Don’t Know How to Draw a Tree’, Carmen José takes you on an artistic stroll through the woods. She wonders when we learnt to draw trees in a certain way, and what this says about our relationship with the world. ‘I Don’t Know How to Draw a Tree’, Rotopol (2025) is now on show in the exhibition ‘Omslag’ at Rijksmuseum Meermanno.

The printed book is thriving like never before. This summer, a new generation takes over our historic 19th-century library to explore the concept of ‘change’, placing new design right next to centuries of history.

_________

This year, in connection with the main exhibition, we set off on a journey to explore landscapes in all their forms. 🔍 And of course, we also had to ask the illustrators what their favourite landscapes are. 🙌🏻🌳⛰️ taken in Holešovická tržnice by @carmenjose_work
