SCREE is an instrumental trio made up of Ryan El-Solh on guitar, Carmen Quill on bass, and Jason Burger on drums. After nearly a decade playing together they have developed a near-telepathic rapport, which they put to work interpreting El-Solh’s impressionistic compositions. Scree’s sound draws on an eclectic range of influences from Ellington to Brahms to Lebanese composer Ziad Rahbani. Pitchfork described their 2023 debut album, Jasmine On A Night In July, as “spellbinding.” by @carmenquill

“Plaza”, the second single from Carmen Quill’s ‘Harmless’ is out today!

In Carmen’s words:

Plaza was originally an instrumental tune that I wrote while sitting in a red brick plaza on the Stanford campus one summer (I was there teaching at a jazz camp). Later I reworked it into a song with lyrics about navigating the aftermath of a breakup and ultimately growing past it into something brighter. After years of performing this song as a solo voice and acoustic bass, I realized there was a whole soundworld I had been imagining around it. It’s been gratifying to bring that imagined world to life through the production on this track - it was a very intuitive, playing-in-the-sandbox kind of process.

‘Harmless’ is out November 6 and save the date for a November 19 Brooklyn release show celebration, details to come soon!

@carmenquill‘s 'Plaza 'opens her forthcoming album Harmless with the feeling of a deep breath after a difficult conversation. The Brooklyn bassist, composer, and singer builds the track around hushed vocals and swelling synths, creating an intimate space where emotional tension can slowly loosen its grip.

Beyond excited to share that there is a new @carmenquill record out on November 6, and you can hear the first single and title track today!

If there’s one artist who embodies what Ruination strives to be, it’s Carmen. A frequent collaborator with so many artists in the family, and a truly singular visionary composer, singer, and performer.

Vinyl & CDs for preorder at the link in bio, and the single out now everywhere you hear music.

On her sophomore full-length album Harmless, upright bassist, singer, and composer Carmen Quill allows new voices into her intimate, self-questioning musical conversations. The Brooklyn-based artist’s avant-pop songs are centered around down-to-earth mantras—sometimes murmured notes-to-self, sometimes impassioned expressions of devotion, sometimes jazz-inflected bass motifs that express just as much as her pithily insightful lyrics. Her melodies are as unconventional and unassumingly virtuosic as those of her spiritual ancestors Meredith Monk and Björk; her bass provides as dynamic and surprising a primary accompaniment to her mercurial vocal phrases as Joanna Newsom’s harp.

For all the refinement of its arrangements and the cleverness of its compositional feints, Quill’s music always manages to convey a sense of childlike wonder. Her central melodic phrases don’t feel “written” as much as captured during the process of invention. Each seems to take place within “one long moment” (as Quill says in “Across the waves,” an otherworldly baroque-pop ballad which borrows phrases from Virginia Woolf’s To The Lighthouse). The listener becomes aligned with Quill’s self-discovery as it happens. Once we internalize everything that makes this music so special—the mercurial structures, the enveloping sense of three-dimensionality, the bittersweet humor, the ways in which Quill’s words, aaahs and hmmms can express the same depth of feeling—the space left for our own personal reflection feels infinite. The songs on Harmless are snapshots of processes in motion, ones that seem to have begun long before we started tuning in and will continue for long afterwards. by @carmenquill
