As we gear up towards the deadline for Vol. 4 (Dissident Bodies), we're reminiscing on all the body-based works in the last volume.

Here's "Ngoymalayiñ: Refusing the Archive of Death by @catrileocarrion in Vol. 3 (Fire). 🔥

4 MORE DAYS TO SUBMIT TO VOL. 4!

“Ngoymalayiñ: Refusing the Archive of Death” is a video-performance filmed in the city of Valparaíso (Chile) where Malku Catrileo intervenes and perform writing the phrase “ngoymalayiñ” which in Mapuzungun means “we do not forget” as an action that questions the colonial history of Valparaíso up to the present. Malku writes this phrase with neoprene and fire as a gesture that refers to the colonial violence that is still present in this territory named by the Indigenous peoples as Pikunmapu/Qullasuyu. by @carnationzine

Open call!!! Our next theme is Dissident Bodies and we are seeking artwork and writing submissions by BIPOC.

While state policies, surveillance, and militarization infringe on bodily autonomy and the right to life itself, Vol. 4 of Carnation will reflect on how to resist systems of domination through embodied gestures and acts of refusal. We are accepting artwork and writing submissions in all forms interpreting the theme of Dissident Bodies.

Some topics that stem from this overarching theme may include but are not limited to the following topics:

٠ Collective bodies (people, movements, and protest)

٠ Bodies of knowledge & thought (archives, lineage, memory, and pedagogy)

٠ The natural world (bodies of water, celestial bodies, embodiment, and interconnectedness)

٠ Sovereignty and futurity (agency and world-building through disruption, disobedience, and alternative lifepaths)

💌💌💌

Payment: Selected contributors will be paid a flat fee of $300 CAD and will get a free copy of the publication. We thank our funders @mbartscouncil and @winnipegartscouncil for making this possible.

Deadline: Tuesday, August 10, 11:59pm CDT

Submission details: Link in bio. ❣️

Special announcement! 💌 We are delighted to be working with Christina Battle as guest co-editor of Vol. 4! The call for submissions will be launched soon, stay tuned. 👀

🌟About🌟 Christina Battle is an artist, curator, and writer based in amiskwacîwâskahikan (Edmonton), within the Aspen Parkland: the transition zone where prairie and forest meet. Her practice focuses on thinking deeply about the concept of disaster: its complexity, and the intricacies entwined within it. She looks to disaster as a series of intersecting processes including social, environmental, cultural, political, and economic, which are implicated not only in how disaster is caused but also in how it manifests, is responded to, and overcome.

Battle’s practice prioritizes collaboration, experimentation, and failure; she has exhibited internationally in festivals and galleries as both artist and curator. With Zach Ayotte, Christina co-publishes and edits COI, a new online publication bridging the relationship between art and culture from the perspective of the Canadian Prairies.

Carnation, Vol. 3 (Fire)

Molotov cocktails. Altars. Vigils. Fire incites action and passion in the face of destruction and injustice. Fire as in anger; fire as in taking refuge; fire as in escaping war. Fire as in too hot to touch and too thick to see through the smoke—a smoke that once cleared, reveals burnt flags, burnt bridges, and the skeletal remains of colonial institutions.

Fire is the beginning and the end, and can blur the distinction between these stages. When the earth expels lava and forms new land, does this cycle have an ending? Can we mark its beginning? Fire can mark finality with perceived definitiveness: a wildfire may wipe a land barren, yet be found to continue months later as a winter burn. Even in its finality, fire can prompt regeneration as the land responds to its dangerous qualities in brilliant ways.

Carnation, Vol. 3 (Fire) includes artwork and writing on themes of destruction, passion, ritual, resistance, and transformation. -Publisher
