A volar entre rocas closes this Saturday!

Join us for a behind-the-scenes tour with Exhibitions Manager Kay this Saturday at 1 PM. Bring your questions and learn about exhibition installation techniques! Or visit during gallery hours to use our Yoto players, explore a volar entre rocas’ creative access audio tour, and get a feel for our tactile materials station. Both the Yoto players and tactile materials are located in the welcome station cart by the front doors of the gallery!

Don’t have time this week to visit? Well we have two exciting publications related to Mariana’s practice and exhibition available now, for purchase in gallery or through our webstore!

In relation to a volar entre rocas – mapping elsewhere, is an artist book containing text, illustrations, and hand-coloured fragments unique to each copy. The text takes the form of a fragmented essay, where family, memories, and other experiences give way to reflections on the place of the personal within larger structures. The text begins with a walk around the artist’s neighbourhood in Winnipeg, Manitoba. During this walk, the artist’s memories of Mexico are triggered as they cross paths with green space made private and Tyndall stone landmarks. Social and natural histories of stones in architecture in Mexico and in Canada contrast in mapping elsewhere among reflections of a slow and informal learning of narratives marginalized by colonialism. Topics of identity, place-making, and power intertwine in this intimate processing of self.

@carnationzine ’s Volume 2, Pleasure – Artwork and texts by BIPOC creators have been gathered demonstrating joy, desire, and intimacy as acts of defiance. As acts of time travel; sentimentality; criticality. As responses to lived experiences of diaspora and displacement, these artworks and writings carve a space to ruminate, to return, and to lean into the sweet, erotic, and dissident undertones of what it means to extend oneself in the pursuit of pleasure. Mariana is a managing editor of Carnation Zine.

My work was recently featured in Carnation Zine, Vol. 3. I’m grateful to have been included among such thought-provoking artists and writers like the fearless indigenous curator and educator Wanda Nanibush.

The theme for this volume is “fire” with selected artworks and writing that address destruction, passion, ritual, resistance, and transformation. The zine’s design layout also happens to be 🔥 (by Osman Bari). Most moving are the candid letters between the editors who are devastated by the genocide in Gaza.

Pick up a copy @maktaba.bookshop in Montreal or @issuesmagshop in Toronto. You can also order online via @carnationzine - support independent zines and don’t stop talking about Palestine ❤️

Carnation, Vol. 3 (Fire)

Molotov cocktails. Altars. Vigils. Fire incites action and passion in the face of destruction and injustice. Fire as in anger; fire as in taking refuge; fire as in escaping war. Fire as in too hot to touch and too thick to see through the smoke—a smoke that once cleared, reveals burnt flags, burnt bridges, and the skeletal remains of colonial institutions.

Fire is the beginning and the end, and can blur the distinction between these stages. When the earth expels lava and forms new land, does this cycle have an ending? Can we mark its beginning? Fire can mark finality with perceived definitiveness: a wildfire may wipe a land barren, yet be found to continue months later as a winter burn. Even in its finality, fire can prompt regeneration as the land responds to its dangerous qualities in brilliant ways.

Carnation, Vol. 3 (Fire) includes artwork and writing on themes of destruction, passion, ritual, resistance, and transformation. -Publisher

Sonali visited Art Metropole in Toronto recently with her pal Jordan. @artmetropole is a non-profit artist-run centre that publishes, promotes, exhibits, archives, and distributes artists’ books, multiples, and related media. They have zines! Definitely worth a visit ✨

Gomez shares the often unglamorous side of the job, which they reveal involves a lot of admin and self discipline to make deadlines! They share that at the root of the word for curating is this aspect of care:
❤️caring for artists
❤️caring for the work
❤️ caring about the concept

New episode of the Artalogue featuring Mariana Muñoz Gomez is out now wherever you get your podcasts!!!

Gomez is a Winnipeg-based artist, writer, zine maker and curator who intricately weaves personal narratives with collective histories in their lens-based practice. In today’s episode, Gomez shares what it is like to work for yourself as an artist interested in exploring many directions.

During our discussion, Gomez shares the motivations behind their work and how they harness the power of art to question societal norms through a relational lens. The episode shines a spotlight on the role of the curator, where Gomez emphasizes the importance of representation and care for the artists involved, particularly BIPOC voices.

Alongside this, Gomez reveals the discipline and organisation required to be a freelancer, sharing how the least glamorous parts of being an artist are almost as important as the art itself. They also offer fascinating insights into their recent curatorial projects and the journey of creating @carnationzine , a zine uplifting marginalised artists.

Listeners will gain a deeper understanding of how art can provoke thought and inspire action within communities while navigating the complexities of a creative career. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with Gomez’ journey as they pave the way for meaningful dialogues in contemporary art.

Carnation (@carnationzine) is a submission-based zine that shares artwork and writing created through a lens of diaspora and displacement by BIPOC. Funded by a Present grant, Carnation released Vol. 3, Fire, centred on artwork and writing on themes of destruction, passion, ritual, resistance, and transformation.

Edited by Christina Hajjar, Whess Harman & Mariana Muñoz Gomez, Vol. 3 features work by 34 contributors including a foreword by Wanda Nanibush.

“Often, discourses on diaspora bring up connotations of loss, coercion, fragmentation, and scattering,” says Carnation Zine. “But diaspora also signals abundance and multiplicity, rife with possibilities. There is richness in the very act of reaching, whether that is for home, connection, or wholeness; there is power held within language and art to resist and redefine.”

Present grants supports the presentation of work in Manitoba in all disciplines. The next deadline to apply is February 25!
