Why are we taught to run from the rain?

São Paulo is known as the rain land, and we normally get all 4 seasons in just 24 hours: you leave your house in a summer dress and come back needing a trench coat and a scarf. And I always complained about it.

When I moved to California, one of my first thoughts was “it never rainsssss, I’m free! no more frizzy hair, wet socks, and people smelling like wet dogs in the subway”. Little did I know that I would absolutely, with every vein in my heart and every corner of my brain, HATE the lack of rain.

My plants die, my hair and skin are dry, I’m always thirsty, and now I have to put on a spotify playlist to be able to nap listening to the rain hit my window? That I wouldn’t be able to smell the asphalt after a thunderstorm? Even the gross worms that emerge from the grass after a thunderstorm are being missed.

There was no rain in LA for almost 7 months. I cried watching videos of people’s balconies during thunderstorms. I almost booked a flight to the other side of the country just to feel rain on my skin and come right back. There are so many things we love and appreciate without realizing it, and we only see it once we lose it.

My mom texted me “the world is ending here in São Paulo, you’ll arrive during a thunderstorm” and I just replied “God listened to my prayers.” And suddenly, I didn’t care about my lion looking untamable hair, or my wet socks, or the smell of a humid crowd. I danced during every rain shower there, feeling the water wash my worries away.

Please God, your sun-kissed daughter also needs some water to bloom. Send some of it to California, the dry-land.

(Curious fact: this beautiful church is located in one of the most dangerous squares in São Paulo, Praça da Sé. In my whole life, I was never able to take my phone out to photograph it. Until now: everyone, even the robbers, was hiding from the rain. I was the only one there, and now I have a video of myself dancing in front of the church) taken in São Paulo, Brazil by @carolcanon
