#tbt. He was my dear #friend and mentor. How we laughed at the night. He was always astounded by the innocent power to attract dozens of beautiful straight men at a time. I had no idea at the time, I was floating on rarified air. I was young and I don’t think my feet touched the ground for 10 years...I was too busy dancing, laughing, #singing, #acting, #working, #learning. We didn’t monetize youth and beauty then like they do now. We weren’t self-conscious . We were just spring flowers in a haze of dizzy bees. He was always there, reliable like moonrise. We would start early at the flea markets and find collectibles until it was time to dine and club hop. We each had our daschunds and dread of boredom. We never slept. There was too much fun to be had. #NewYork was the fuel and we were Ferraris speeding down 9th ave on antique sequins and champagne. There was art to observe and critique. Little tattle: we always split the fare on the cab ride home. I would drop him off on Madison and take 85th across the park to the #uws. He’d give me a five and a one though he was a multimillionaire and I was working my way through college, singing in clubs by night and selling jeans after school. Three years ago today I watched them zip you into a body bag. I gently kissed you goodbye and told you I love you. I saw them lift the gurney and slide you into the back of the emergency vehicle and watched in horror as they drove you up the street for the last time.
The love we shared is all around me. I am holding our memories close today and the knowledge of what we shared. The trees are wrapping their arms around me like you said they would. They are your arms, strong, loving, pure and true and like our love, they weather every storm and they grow, nourish me, give me shade and oxygen. Like you, their roots are deep. They protectively hold up the hillside and my strength . My beloved birds nest in them and you are here with me, your ashes mixed into their roots. My darling husband. Always until I die.
I love you Kevin Rooney, the smartest, funniest, most romantic and corniest man in #hollywood. We tasted each other’s tears and made each other whole.
I’ll never forget the most beautiful thing you ever wrote to me, maybe the most beautiful thing any writer ever wrote to à woman:

Early #90s before we knew what we now know, before the internet, before cellphones, when you could just run into someone at the corner #bodega in #NYC and the whole next 24 hours could change— thé delightful and horrible thing about living in that era was that you never knew what was about to happen. It could be a monumental career boost or a knife at your throat on the D. It could be love or death at any moment. You could make a lot of money in an hour and lose even more in five minutes.
Life was a nonstop thrill. This Polaroid is rare. No one who was hip had cameras. It was gauche to take pics. Moments were like smoke—poof! Gone. You had to be there and if you weren’t, tough titties.

My therapist was a drag Queen.

Things weren’t comfortable, they were pure hazard energy.

People rarely made love on beds. There were stalls, hallways, hatchecks, stairwells, fire escapes for that.

Secrets were scrawled on club bathroom walls in lipstick.

Precious phone numbers were penned on your arm.

A frozen phonebooth was a mirror, à light, toilet, sex box, place to get high, tell stories, slip in a dime to call a need. Those phones rang, too.

Change jingled in your pocket.

Fucking lightning ran in our veins.

Cocaine and caviar, washed down with Moët, hot pants and fishnets, Fiorucci spikes, Marlboro lights, city lights, hail and hot lava— gropey mafia hitmen with gold chains, hand rolled spliffs, corner mirrors in elevators so you could spot a murderer before you walked in, used needles under your heels, sun coming up and melting the black ice on the sidewalk…

#Manhattan music was black , raw, and we danced until our feet bled. We felt nothing and everything. We were on a razor’s edge for a decade.

These animal heads by @aiww are significant on many levels. They are a recreation of what was once stolen and sold off…a symbol of the looting of Chinese culture. Not mere zodiac signs. And the instillation is a reminder that political repression cannot, will never stop art from flourishing. Certain animals in the installation affect me deeply as a vegan animal rights activist. Thé Bull, because I find bullfighting to be the cruelest “art, “ bulls being peaceful herbivores. Thé rat, as they are intelligent beings who are the most persecuted and the pig, billions of them born to be slaughtered.
