45 years in this biz… and still, I get to work with the best. There is great fun in working with seasoned actors. This one gave me a great tip (to try one take tipsy!) I always learn something new — a fresh perspective when the camera hits your face…it’s never a mask if you’re any good; it’s the deepest reveal of who you are. There are a million ways to tell the story and that’s what makes a performance sparkle. Bring the pizzazz, I say.

“I was happy that he was in this world, happy to be alive in the same world that he was in.” — Carole Davis (2018)

The woman sitting next to 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 in the second photo is Carole R. Davis, who wrote “Slow Love,” the seventh track on Sign o’ the Times. In 2021, speaking about that night, she said: “I still have that dress in my closet, and I remember his gloves kept getting snagged on the sequins as he ushered me through the gauntlet of gawkers.”

For years, Slow Love was believed to be co-written by Davis, whom Prince met in the mid-80s. However, it is essentially a sole composition by Davis—she wrote the lyrics, the music, and the vocal arrangement. Prince only contributed by rewriting and re-arranging the bridge.

Davis recalled: “He had his lawyers call me, and they offered me $25,000 to own the song outright, and I refused, and they got back to me about a month later to give me 50 percent of publishing and writers, which I accepted for the opportunity to appear on a Prince record.”

Carole Davis eventually released her own version of the song, produced by Nile Rodgers, which appeared as a bonus track on the CD edition of her 1989 debut album Heart of Gold.

Bring the fire. Serve the ice.

Wink, sashay, provoke. Tempt. Soften. Rage. Laugh. Slay.

Now do it in heels and red lipstick …on the show everyone is talking about.
