A small Japan/painting study I haven’t previously shared. The Chrysanthemum pattern is painted in gold, and has a spiraling growth pattern. I’m most interested in underlying interlocking spirals, and their interchange of energy (+ its symbolism). But the colors & touch are what give it some force.

Small Painting Study/Japan -
An optical, vibratory field of hand painted pattern, like many mantras marking time, space & ephemerality. The pattern itself has protective energies- and how do you read it? As a gingko leaf, pine, a folding fan?

Texture, touch.

Another little painting study from around my trip to Japan. Acrylic ink on Mylar (Grafix drafting film), 12 x 9 inches

I don’t YET have my full level of dexterity & stamina back after a hand/wrist injury & surgery from 6 months ago. But I look forward to when I will - and I can do these intricate gold waves again. ✨

A small study made after my trip to Japan. Acrylic & gold ink on Grafix drawing film (duralar), 12 x 9 inches.
.
It really is so difficult to photograph my paintings due to how they shift with the light. The metallic & iridescent parts that come forward and then recede spatially. Of course, there is great meaning for me in this - in the expression of the ephemeral, ever-shifting nature of being alive. I hope these come alive in each of us and our shifting perceptions.
.
Meanwhile, so much gratitude to @juliosims.studio for doing such a brilliant job of photographing my art (and not yet killing me in the process). The one here is just my iPhone while he toils on the difficult ones.

THE RACKET IS COMING.
I’m so excited to be part of this!
This fall, the Association of Hysteric Curators takes over two Southern California galleries with A Racket of Banshees: Goddesses and Monsters Re-Imagined.
Goddesses. Monsters. Myth. Ritual. Transformation. Performance. Feminist futures.
Beginning September 8 at @wignallmuseum and September 14 at @lavcartgallery, A Racket of Banshees brings together contemporary feminist artists working across painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, video, performance, and community practice.
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be introducing the artists, artworks, performances, and ideas that make up this sprawling project.
Follow along. Share the work. Amplify the artists.
Let’s make a racket.

Detail of a painting that is probably finished, but maybe not. The in-between state. For me & my paintings. A dialogue, a conversation, a letting go eventually. Sometimes it’s very clear when we’re done. Often it takes time to see it. Or it needs more- Did enough happen in this experience?

Collages & Limited Edition Archival Prints ✨
.
Here are a batch of my more recent favorites- of original handmade collages in black bound books. They are like little quick paintings - over the years (I started in 1997 as a secret practice) they have become more abstract. They are spatial, textural, playful, I hope surprising and unexpected. They help me access the imaginal, dreamworld through color, texture, memory. And when I get stuck in my painting practice, I move to making these in order to open up stuck pathways, get into play & pleasure, and tap into freshness and a deeper mindspace.

I am currently offering a limited number of private one-on-one art sessions for artists and creative practitioners who are already in relationship with their work (in whatever state that may be). This includes visual artists, as well as writers, performers, musicians, therapists, and others who are moving toward visual art as a parallel or emerging practice. And who want to grow their potential and possibilities.

These sessions aren’t about instruction - they’re more like sitting together with the work - looking, listening, noticing patterns, tensions, and possibilities. A space to explore, articulate what’s present, what feels alive, and what may want more time or care. I offer reflection, feedback, and context, drawing from visual art practices, art history, shadow work, archetypes, tools, and imaginal inquiry, always in response to what you and your work are asking. And attuned to the particular intelligence of your work.

Other things we may address include materials, processes, creating more flow in the studio, techniques, resources, and if desired, ways to share your work in the world.

Sessions are held on Zoom, with some in-person sessions in LA available. I work in short series as well as longer ongoing engagements.

If this feels aligned, I’m happy to offer a 20 minute Zoom conversation to see if the work is a good fit. Email carole@carolesilverstein.com to schedule a conversation.

The world needs your gold and your light.

Delighted to be in this show! Opening Reception is today,
Saturday January 10, 4:00-6:00pm
@nancytoomeyfineart
@minnesotastreetproject

Nancy Toomey Fine Art is pleased to announce a group exhibition titled “Obsessive | Compulsive” on view through January 31, 2026, curated by Eric Butcher with works by Larry Bell, Lucinda Burgess, Eric Butcher, Morrissey & Hancock, Andy Harper, Sam Hodge, Barbara Nicholls, Matthew Picton, Diogo Pimentão, Gregg Renfrow, Giulia Ricci, Michael Russell, Carole Silverstein, and Suzan Woodruff.

The gallery is located inside San Francisco’s Minnesota Street Project, 1275 Minnesota Street. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 12pm to 4pm, and by appointment–please contact nancy@nancytoomeyfineart.com or 415-307-9038.

Join us for the exhibition reception at the gallery on Saturday, January 10, from 4pm to 6pm. This event is free and open to the public.

“Obsessive | Compulsive,” curated by UK-based artist Eric Butcher at Nancy Toomey Fine Art in San Francisco, is an exhibition of works which are clearly and visibly a result of the processes of their creation. A preoccupation with systems, procedures, and processes allows each of the artists to end up in a place unplanned and unimagined. They share a preoccupation with the materiality of their medium, a delight in the physical properties of the material, and the dialogue between chance and control...
