“You are allowed to still be becoming.”

Last week, Carolina K-12 Director Cori Greer-Banks had the privilege of delivering the keynote address at Wake Young Women’s Leadership Academy in celebration of International Day of the Girl.

Her message to the students centered on three ideas: Use your voice. Protect your mind. Bring another girl with you.

Drawing on her experiences as an educator, historian, and leader, she reminded students that leadership doesn’t begin with a title, confidence doesn’t require the absence of doubt, and another girl’s success is never a measure of their own worth.

At Carolina K-12, we believe education should do more than prepare young people for their futures. It should equip them to question, think critically, recognize their own potential, and help shape the world around them.

We’re grateful to Wake Young Women’s Leadership Academy for the invitation and to EducationNC for sharing this special celebration.

The Griggs story is once again going beyond Rockingham County.

Over the years, the Griggs v. Duke Power Company story has been shared with audiences well beyond Rockingham County—at conferences, professional learning experiences, and with educators who may have never heard that this history began right here.

And it deserves to be told.

This is the story of Black workers, their families, and their community who challenged discriminatory employment practices and helped take a local fight all the way to the United States Supreme Court. I’m honored to have been able to carry this story beyond Rockingham County many times over the years—and to do so once again with Carolina K-12 and Facing History & Ourselves.

This professional learning experience will bring Griggs into conversation with the Delano grape strike and the broader themes of organizing, workers’ rights, and solidarity.

Griggs is more than a Supreme Court case.

It is a Rockingham County story.
A Black history story.
A workers’ rights story.
A story of people coming together to create change.
A story that shows how local history can make national headlines.

I’m grateful for another opportunity to share this history beyond the borders of Rockingham County and to keep making sure the people at the center of this story are remembered.

The people of Rockingham County helped change the nation.

What a beautiful, beautiful day. ☀️

The weather was on our side, the teachers were outstanding, and the conversation was everything we hoped it would be.

For “When Crisis Comes: Oedipus, Public Trust, and the Cost of Knowing,” educators moved between classroom, cemetery, and theater, using Oedipus: King/Colonus to think about leadership, truth, memory, belonging, and what communities do when difficult histories demand to be faced.

A very special thank you to Professor Al Duncan, who brought such charisma, warmth, and wisdom to the day. Connecting Greek tragedy to the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery was no small feat, but Al made the connections feel natural, thoughtful, and deeply relevant. He gave us new ways to think about burial, community, public memory, and the role of the Chorus, and our teachers met him with incredible curiosity.

And I am eternally grateful for Jeff Aguiar and our partnership with PlayMakers Repertory Company. Jeff truly embodies the spirit of PlayMakers’ original mission in his commitment to making theater accessible and meaningful to everyone. Carolina K-12 benefits from that commitment. Teachers benefit. And ultimately, students across North Carolina benefit, too.

There is something powerful about giving educators the time and space to think deeply, ask hard questions, experience art, and learn from one another.

Yesterday was one of those days. ❤️

What can a grape strike in California and a landmark North Carolina court case teach us about solidarity, workers’ rights, and the power of collective action?

Join Carolina K-12, Facing History & Ourselves, and the NC Department of Public Instruction for a FREE day of professional learning on Friday, October 16, 2026, from 9:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. in Chapel Hill.

Through the Sowing Change Inquiry, educators will explore the Delano Grape Strike and Boycott, examining how farmworkers built unity, organized across communities, and sustained a five-year movement for change.

We’ll also bring the conversation home to North Carolina by exploring Griggs v. Duke Power and what this landmark case can teach us about labor, civil rights, equity, and the ways ordinary people challenge unjust systems.

We are especially excited to welcome Valencia Abbott, 2025 Gilder Lehrman History Teacher of the Year, who will help participants connect these histories to local stories of organizing and workers’ rights.

At Carolina K-12, one of our greatest hopes is that the learning does not stop when a retreat ends. We want it to travel back into classrooms, spark new ideas, and reach students in meaningful ways.

That is exactly what happened with Robin Casey, one of our participants from this summer’s Mountains & Democracy: Democracy in Place Teacher Retreat in Asheville.

During the retreat, teachers created collages to reflect on the experiences, ideas, and perspectives they were carrying forward. Robin took that activity back to her EDU 210 students and used it as a first-day-of-class closing activity, sharing her own retreat collage as the exemplar and inviting students to create their own.

This is the full-circle moment we work for.

Professional learning is most powerful when teachers adapt it, personalize it, and use it to create meaningful experiences for students. We are proud to see Robin taking an activity from the retreat and turning it into something her students could connect with right away.

Robin, thank you for allowing Carolina K-12 to share this moment and for showing what it looks like when great teaching keeps moving forward. 💚
