What do a Civil War-era plantation owner and a modern “girl boss” have in common? Maybe more than you think. Join Dr. Tanya Shields at the Ackland on Thursday, September 17 from 5:30–7 p.m. for a talk examining two powerful plantation-owning women, Adelicia Acklen and Dorothy Thomas. Dr. Shields will trace their unsettling legacy into the present and explore what happens when women gain power in systems built on inequality. Hosted by @unchumanities. Free, but space is limited! RSVP here 👉 https://loom.ly/_MyhKKU or tap the link in our bio.

This summer, 100 educators from across North Carolina joined us for our Democracy in Place retreats in Asheville and Wilmington. Together, we explored how democracy has been shaped, challenged, and carried forward across our state, and how these histories can enrich civic learning in classrooms today.

To the teachers who spent their summers learning alongside us: thank you for making North Carolina a better place. ❤️🤍💙 by @unchumanities

Happy (belated) 85th, Bob Dylan!

Last night we were joined by the incredibly talented Jess Klein, Dawn Landes, and Bowed Dylan to perform and discuss the songs that made him a legend. A huge thank you to Ashley Melzer — who always brings such brilliant curiosity to these conversations — for her moderation.

And yes, of course there was cake. 🎂 by @unchumanities
