What a privilege to be able to articulate connections between my two lives for The Chronicle of Higher Education. Sincere thanks to my excellent editor Evan Kindley, and to Rick Moody, Michael Gutierrez, Taylor Cowdery, and my two favorite Dorothys--Clarke and Hale--for their indispensable feedback on drafts. And thanks to Merve Emre for the contact.

Congratulations to the inaugural America 250 NC Freedom Fellows, sponsored by NC Department of Natural & Cultural Resources & Carolina K-12, as part of the America 250 NC initiative!

In a thematic approach to history education, the America 250 Freedom Fellowship will broaden its scope beyond just the years of the American Revolution, as Fellows study how inhabitants of North Carolina throughout the last three centuries have interacted with the nation’s most cherished ideal: freedom. Fellows will visit N.C. Historic Sites around the state and engage in virtual learning throughout the six-month fellowship to deepen their historical scholarship and enhance their teaching practices.

This opportunity also aims to create a community of learning where educators can network with other historians, scholars, cultural institutions, and authors from around the state. The Fellows will also play a pivotal role in advising NCDNCR on meeting the evolving needs of K-12 students and teachers. Their insights will shape the implementation of North Carolina’s America 250 initiative and its accompanying resources in classrooms statewide.

Learn more about these incredible education leaders, the Fellowship, and the America 250 NC initiative at the link in our bio.

$1/18 @ The Cave! Friends, I am thrilled to announce BONNIE WHITMORE from AUSTIN TX is my featured guest at the next HOT SWAPS. Bonnie and I clocked many miles together in 2023, but that is a mere fraction of the distance this musical genius has behind her. Sidewoman extraordinaire, Bonnie has held down bass for a LOT of your favorites, including Steve Earle, Hays Carll, John Moreland, Sunny Sweeny, and Jimmy Dale Gilmore to name a few. A member of the inimitable WHITMORE SISTERS, she is also an accomplished solo artist in her own right. You don’t want to miss this one—come down to the Cave 1/18 and listen to her fill up the whole room with her heart-melting voice. We will trade songs guitar-pull style but expect plenty of harmony too. This babe does not miss. #bonniewhitmore #hotswaps #womeninAmericana #whitmoresisters #northcarolinamusic #indiemusic #womeninrock #austinmusic #welovebonnie #thecavenc #chapelhillmusic$
