In honor of Miss USA this week and placing Top 16 at Miss New York USA 🇺🇸 here are 7 lessons pageantry taught me about myself, confidence, and life 🫶🏼

1. Do something simply because it’s for you: As we get older, so much of life becomes about being responsible, productive, and taking care of everyone else. You’re still allowed to have dreams that don’t need to make sense to anyone but you.

2. Try the thing you’ve been talking yourself out of: You don’t have to be the most experienced, the most confident, or the obvious choice. Sometimes you just have to be brave enough to show up. You may discover a part of yourself you never would have met otherwise.

3. Taking care of yourself is one of the greatest investments you’ll ever make: Move your body. Nourish it. Rest. Take the walk. Drink the water. Protect your peace. This is the one body carrying you through every dream you will ever have.

4. Stop waiting for someone to give you permission to become her: Whoever “her” is for you… the confident woman, the entrepreneur, the mother, the athlete, the woman who walks into a room like she belongs there, you don’t have to wait until you feel worthy. Start becoming her now.

5. One day, you’ll wish you could go back and tell yourself to stop being so afraid: Our lives are happening right NOW, not when we’re more confident or finally “ready.” So ask for the promotion. Post the reel. Book the trip. Make the friend. Chase the dream. Wear the dress. Let yourself be seen.

6. People aren’t thinking about you nearly as much as you think they are: I wish I could give every younger version of myself the years I spent worrying about what other people thought. Most people aren’t judging you and the ones who are don’t decide how big your life gets to be.

7. Your life begins where your comfort zone ends: Almost everything I’m proud of started with a moment where I thought, I don’t know if I can do this. I’ve learned that fear isn’t always a sign to stop… sometimes it’s a sign you’re about to meet a new version of yourself.

People ask me if women are mean to each other at pageants… well it’s the complete opposite… and I’ll tell you why…

We are all walking toward the same dream, knowing only one name will be called… and somehow they’re still the first to fix your hair, calm your nerves, tell you that you look beautiful, and remind you that you belong.

Maybe that’s because we all know what it feels like to hope someone sees something special in us.

When you’ve felt that kind of vulnerability yourself, you don’t want another woman to feel alone in it.

So instead of competing from insecurity, we choose encouragement.

Because if we’re all hoping to be seen, all dreaming of the same opportunity, and all fighting our own silent battles…
