☀️Chants of “Kha-mo-ro,” translating
to “sunshine” or “little sun,” filled Wenceslas and Old Town Square today during the 28th annual Khamoro World Roma Festival in Prague, Czech Republic.

Established in 1999, the festival was founded in direct response to anti-Romani sentiment. Since then, it attracts approximately 10,000 visitors from around the country and beyond, making it the world’s largest professional Romani festival.

More than its bright colors, music, performances and audience-inclusive celebration, Khamoro aims to “bring together the Romani minority and the majority society through art and culture.”

🐾 Jiří and his 1-year-old dog Tizian (translating to “Titan” in English) stand on a corner in the Prague 2 district. “Just a baby,” Jiří said that he does this in an effort to help Tizian get used to the busy city streets packed with people and surrounded by trams.

🇨🇿 Scenes from Wenceslas Square.
More about Photo 1: Each time I’ve walked through Old Town, I’ve seen this man on his knees with a cap in his hands, begging in the street. Today, he was positioned closer to Wenceslas Square, named for the patron saint of Bohemia. During his life, Saint Wenceslas walked the streets barefoot, visiting churches and giving alms, prompting the attribution of the name, “father of all the wretched.” The song “Good King Wenceslas” by Bing Crosby, expands upon the tale and iterates his legacy of his good deeds: “There, Christian men, be sure/ Wealth or rank possessing. Ye, who now will bless the poor/ Shall yourselves find blessing.”
But the poor receive no blessing from wealthy pedestrians trodding through Wenceslas Square. Their only gift is a blind eye.
That a square named for a man dedicated to charity and service for the poor is the same square garners fame for being “the center of commerce and entertainment in Prague.” The irony of it all was overwhelming.
