“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.” — Psalm 34:18–19

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.” — Matthew 25:35–36

“If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday. And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.” — Isaiah 58:10–11

In Haiti, I saw starving children, animals wasting away, people walking miles for filthy water, and trash covering the streets. But even in all the brokenness, I felt God’s presence. His Word came alive before my eyes. It reminded me that He is near to the brokenhearted, that when we care for the least of these we serve Christ Himself, and that if we pour ourselves out for the hungry, His light will shine even in the darkest places.

God was there. And even in the suffering, there was beauty everywhere. taken in Grand-Goave, Haiti by @carsonmcdougal
