I made some new work in Portland, Maine this summer at @ultravioletresidency

I was thinking about how to commune with trans spirits, and how light on the water feels like a portal.

I made this by dying fishing wire and weaving it on a floor loom with more fishing wire and party streamers.

💥💥💥TRANS ART FEST 2026 💥💥💥

Thank you to everyone who made this happen. We showed over 150 trans artists across 13 exhibitions and 35 events during April and May in NYC.

We collaborated with countless groups, art spaces, galleries, artists, curators, and allies doing amazing work, and we made this happen for us.

The goal of the festival was to bring people together to strengthen a network of trans artists. We planted seeds for a beautiful garden, and now we need to tend to it.

Ask an artist you saw and admired to get coffee. Trade studio visits with someone you met. Set up a monthly trans crit night at your apartment. Trade photos for web building. Print your friend's zine on your work printer. Cheat the system. Build new systems. Ask for help. Do the thing you’ve been dreaming of doing.

Trans Art Fest will happen again (not next Spring). We need time to plan, to rest, and to dream.

I love you all- thank you for making my big dream come true 💗

Curators Rachel May and Danielle Krcmar wrote an extremely beautiful description of this work:

Inspired by a shared Google Excel sheet created for post-surgery collective care, Shocked created a woven, stitched, and appliquéd piece that resembles a quilt top- a traditional symbol of comfort, the body, and intimacy- stretched over a frame bedecked with ginkgo leaves. Like many species in the natural world, the ginkgo tree can change genders. Coded stitches and mended patches in the piece signify people and their contributions, making it a physical record of the communal labor of shared care and time in support of one person’s transition. Because others in the group have been cared for during their transitions, the quilt holds layers of histories of love, community, and care during times of need, and documents the lives of trans people via the “ordinary object” of the care sheet.

I'm excited that this new work is one of three of my pieces in a show at the Somerville Museum, opening Jan 15 and running through March of 2026 :)

CarterCare_2019_ginkgos.gsheet, 40” x 30” x 2”, woven mixed and cotton threads, linen and found fabric, dyes, stretcher bars

The work is in the gsheet series, honoring and archiving the trans post-surgery spreadsheet. This one references my top surgery in 2019, but I never had a spreadsheet, so this became it. I did have my amazing older sister come take care of me for three weeks, and I remember when I took my first walk around the block, the season had finally turned, and the pavement was covered in ginkgo leaves.

✈ Attempts at Time Travel ✈
These are what I imagine messages sent through time to look like. Each one a thought, a feeling, a hope, sent to an ancestor. This work is about time travel, and finding a home somewhere in the great trans lineage.
