What a whirlwind! Just got these incredible photos from @__selle from last Thursday’s opening of Restraint @studioninedee Thank you all for coming and for looking SO incredible—y’all know how to show up.

There was so much trans joy in this room. I am genuinely overwhelmed by the support and generosity of this community. Being a part of @transartfest has been a real privilege. It’s so incredible to witness, in real time, this work find the audience it deserves.

There are lots more pictures but here are a few for now.

For May Fiber Picks, Geovanni Barrios @gvannibarrios offers a thoughtful and inquisitive walkthrough of “Starling Skies”, presented as part of Trans Art Fest @transartfest at @puffinbrooklyn

Geovanni shares, ”I ventured down the street from our beloved Textile Arts Center (where we just celebrated our Trans Art Fest exhibition Gender Mend) to see the Puffin Brooklyn’s Starling Skies, co-curated by Al Dettmann and Carter Shocket. This poignant exhibition engages with the joys and difficulties of life for artists, adults and kids alike, as they navigate contemporary trans-life. Despite its heavy subject matter, Starling Skies holds up its own weight. I cannot recommend this show enough. One of the twelve exhibitions running through the inaugural Trans Art Fest, I urge every New Yorker, particularly every Brooklynite, to witness the strength of our neighbors in this exhibition.”

Starling Skies curated by @dettmanndesigns and @carter_shocket is on view at Puffin Brooklyn, 227 5th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11215

Gallery hours: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, 11am - 5pm
Closes May 17th, 2026

It’s been a great month at KUNSTRAUM, full of generative exchange between residents and visitors, evolution of studio projects, and exploration of the New York gallery scene.

As part of our visiting critic series, we had Devon Gordon (@devon_devoff__) of Zepster Gallery (@zepstergallery) and Carter Shocket (@carter_shocket) of the Trans Art Fest (@transartfest) come for one-on-one studio visits. We’re so glad to have our community connected to the great work they’re both doing around the city. Thanks also to Devon for hosting our group for a walkthrough at Zepster!

Thanks to all for a great month, and looking forward to what May has in store!

Featuring: Sophie Leonie Shantiben (@akayourfairygodmother) at Zepster Gallery, Carter Shocket with Sue Beyer (@sue_beyer), a detail of a WIP painting by Stephanie Silver (@_stexter_), and Devon Gordon with Alana Miller (@millerthriller).

For those interested in joining our community, our Artist-in-Residence applications are currently open until June 30th, available at the link in our bio.

Art x Text (May 1st-3rd) is a @transartfest gallery show which explores the relationships between our bodies and our art as transgender artists through the words that attach themselves to us, both by choice and by assignment. As part of the weekend gallery show, we will be hosting a zine swap, embroidery workshops, and zine workshops. Over the course of the second two days, New York based transgender artists will be tabling in the gallery with zines and prints related to life in transition.

The show is guest curated by Elliot Rockart at Gallery 198 in Gowanus. Come join us on Friday, May 1st for the opening and zine swap from 6 pm to 10 pm, embroidery classes with Elliot Rockart on Saturday and Sunday, and a trans teen zine workshop with Chrysalis Magazine on Sunday!

DM @elliotrockart for more details. If you’re interested in having your prints/zines sold during the weekend, comment zines!
