work in progress - 20 x 1’x1’x1’ recycled cardboard-box panel with black book-binding tape

Last box before the semester begins.

I’ll be adding boxes much more slowly now that school begins tomorrow 😭, and painting them one by one. Maybe I’ll be done by May.

Eventually, each box will have 2-color stenciled spray paint applied mostly to the top surface.

I want to know how we have changed.

What has happened to us in the last few decades? When so much of our lives has for a long time now been mediated by digital devices and systems, what has happened to how we perceive, think, act, produce, relate, and exist?

I wonder what we have gained and what we have lost in that transformation—not just artistically and creatively, but first and foremost politically.

What is here?

16 hand-made boxes collaged from various used cardboard packing crates and then folded into 1-foot cubes.

Eventually, there’ll be 56 of them in a 7x8 grid.

This is the same size as the large window in my studio; and eventually, each box will have its own variation of the view through my window applied with spray paint.

work in progress - 15 x 1’x1’x1’ recycled cardboard-box panel with black book-binding tape

Going to have to take a break from this soon since school is starting again. Can’t wait to start painting them!

The cuts through the boxes corresponding to the window mullions is beginning to become apparent.

As with the 2D panels, each 3D box will eventually have a 2-color spray-painted image derived from a photograph of a grid square in my studio, in this case of the window and what’s beyond.

Three grids:
1. The regular square grid of the 1’x1’x1’ boxes;

2. The irregular grid of the taped cardboard;

3. The grid of the window frame and mullions slicing through the boxes;

These boxes will eventually carry images taken from the window. For now, I continue building the structure.

work in progress - 9 x 1’x1’x1’ recycled cardboard-box panel with black book-binding tape

1. I collage a panel made of recycled cardboard shipping boxes into the size and shape I need using black book-repair tape.

2. I cut the shape of the box out of the collaged panel.

3. I manually fold the shaped panel into the box I need.
