As the leaves fall, signaling the transition from Fall to Winter, so too will our current exhibitions be changing soon. This is your 1 week reminder that our current exhibits are on display until October 23!

Currently on exhibit in our Project Space:

Palimpsest by Camille Eudes
A palimpsest is a writing material that has been used and reused, its previous marks erased or overwritten, yet never entirely disappearing. Faint traces remain beneath the new, revealing the layers of what came before.

In my body of work Palimpsest, I explore the layering and erasure of marks through printmaking and walking as a way of considering how identity, beliefs, and culture are shaped by the world we inhabit, especially when living between and within multiple cultures at once. I am interested in how the people and places around us continually leave their impressions, creating layers that alter, obscure, or reveal what came before. Identity, like a palimpsest, is never fixed; it is continuously being written, erased, and rewritten through our experiences.

To create these works, I attached drypoint plates (sheets of specialized plastic) to the soles of my shoes and travelled between my physical homes by walking, taking public transit, flying, and driving. As I moved through different environments, the plates collected marks from the spaces I passed through, recording fragments of each journey onto my moving body.

The process mirrors printmaking itself; the spaces I travel through become the plate, my weight and movement become the press, and my body becomes the paper receiving the impressions. Each journey leaves something behind, while simultaneously carrying traces of what came before. Through this process, I consider how I am continually shaped and reshaped by the people, places, and in-betweens I have the privilege to exist with and within.

πŸ“£ Reminder: The Expressions of Interest deadline for "Always Has Been - Conceptualizing Landscape" is next Friday, October 23!

Landscape remains a powerful way to explore memory, belonging, and our relationship to the environment. What can landscape painting say to us now? What new conversations can painting, drawing, printmaking, or photography have with the idea of landscape today?

What does the tradition of landscape painting have left to say to us? What insights does it have about our current moment?

Open to local and regional artists, both emerging or established. We are looking for 8 - 10 artists to create work in any medium, including traditional, experimental, and hybrid practices. All participants will be paid artist fees.

Deadline for Expressions of Interest (EoI): October 23, 2026
Work Completion Date: mid-August 2027

THE BIG PICTURE: The Ultra Large Format Contact Print by Mark Bingham
In the pre-digital age, Old Chief Mountain was a beloved subject of my early photographic efforts. It felt as if there was always something missing, some details lost or some feeling not completely captured with 35mm film. Later in life I discovered ultra large format photography (ULF). The leap from a 1.5 square inch negative to one of 160 or even 240 square Inches was life altering. The possibility of increased detail and emotional resonance was compelling.

Learning the process of shooting, developing, and printing ULF has been a long and challenging effort. ULF photography has a small but passionate community. It’s a tradition that is slowly fading and I hope to do my part to keep it alive by sharing its beauty and artistry, especially for those who are new to it.

In my own photography practice, I am drawn to the interplay of light and shadow, to contrast, texture and shape. I spend time scouting locations, waiting for just the right light, but ultimately, it is the serendipity of the moment that seems to produce the best shot. Developing the negative lets me know if the shot was successful enough to print. Then the big work of printing, reprinting and manipulating the exposure begins in the darkroom. When an image appears as I envision it, or possibly even better, it is magical.

Keepsakes by Seth Cardinal Dodginghorse
Growing up on the Tsuut'ina rez in my family's home, I always saw a photograph of a woman holding a baby in a moss bag. My grandmother would tell me "that baby is mom Elsie Jacobs and the woman is her mom, my granny Winnie Crowchild, these are your grannies." This photo was taken in 1921 and gifted to Winnie where it has lived in my family's home for generations. In 2014 when my family was forcibly displaced for the construction of the SW Calgary Ring Road, holding onto the memories of my family and the place we come from became very important to me. The objects in this work are keepsakes that I've found, bought, stolen, rescued, received, earned, created, and inherited in my life. Each object has a story, memory, and connection to the land, myself, and my family from Tsuut'ina, Amskapi Piikani, Kainai, Saddle Lake, and past relationships.

Currently on exhibit in our Platform Showcase:

Darkness by Zoe Buckskin
Rooted in Blackfoot visual language and the tradition of the Story Robe, the work reflects a continued connection to the land, culture, and community. The robe becomes a personal record of experiences that cannot always be expressed through words, holding stories of loss while also acknowledging the strength that comes from carrying them forward.

The all-black surface represents the darkness that can surround periods of grief, but it also creates a space where new growth can emerge. Through this work I explores the relationship between loss and growth, recognizing that resilience does not mean leaving grief behind, but learning to carry it while remaining connected to culture, land, and community.

The Story Robe becomes both a reflection and a source of power and a way of honouring what has been lost while continuing to move forward. Through the darkness, there is still connection, memory, growth, and the strength to continue.

Currently on exhibit in our Passage Gallery:

Residual Systems by Barbara Bordalejo
Residual Systems brings together linocuts and collages that combine images with pages from dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other discarded books. The works explore how systems persist beyond their moment of use. Obsolete technologies appear alongside fragments of language and thought, bringing different systems for recording, defining, and transmitting knowledge into contact with one another. Newer works extend this investigation to the relationship between image and underlying text to consider how cultural ideas are imposed, inhabited, and contested. Across the exhibition, obsolescence is understood not as disappearance, but as transformation: the persistence of materials, meanings, and ideas after the systems that produced them have changed.

The Blue Book Shelf Project / Forests Aglow by Jean McCarthy

Blue Bookshelf Project:
The Blue Bookshelf Project is a series of original paintings inspired by the random arrangement of books.

I am drawn to the colour and visual rhythm created by these accidental compositions, and fascinated by the emotional and physical pull that physical books exert. For book-lovers like me, a row of titled spines has an almost magnetic quality.

In these paintings, I celebrate how books transform ubiquitous, mass-produced bookshelves into unique works of art.

Forests Aglow:
Join me on a walk through the woods as sunlight filters through winter branches, setting the forest aglow.

Quiet moments in nature lead me to the intersection of science and spirituality, and I find myself wondering why humans build cathedrals when nothing feels more holy than a clearing in the trees.

Here, the light dances and dazzles.

Here, my sadness lifts away in shades of mauve and amber. Hope descends as pastel light.

Here, the heavy scent of earth holds shadowy notes of slumbering gemstone hues.

This whimsical take on nature celebrates a point of view that sees colour everywhere and invites contemplation.

Every shadow is a story. Every shade is a decision to see what can only be felt.
